Big Rig Driver Arrested For Assault After Road Rage Incident South Of Santa Clarita

A big rig driver was arrested on felony assault charges Tuesday, after he allegedly threatened another truck driver during an argument near the Newhall Pass during a road rage incident.

Around 12:40 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the California Highway Patrol, (CHP) Newhall Area Office received reports of a road rage incident between two big rigs on the 5 Freeway near the 210 Freeway, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP office.

“Both big rigs were pulled over on the right shoulder of SB I-5 at the 210 and were having a verbal altercation which led into a physical altercation,” Greengard said.

During the argument, the suspect allegedly threatened the other truck driver with a knife and slashed one of his tires.

When CHP officers arrived, the suspect had fled the scene in his big rig, according to Greengard.

“While interviewing witnesses and the victim, we were able to get a good description of the big rig and driver,” Greengard said.

Around 5 p.m., officers observed a big rig which matched the description of the earlier call traveling on the northbound 5 Freeway near Roxford Street.

Officers conducted a traffic stop and arrested Gabriel Wright, 45, from Lancaster for felony assault with a deadly weapon, Greengard added.

Wright was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station’s jail with bail set at $70,000, according to arrest records.

  1. It’s interesting to see how much debate is going on about whether there is or is not a shortage of truck drivers right now. Regardless, my observation from personal experience is that there’s been a tremendous decline in the quality and driving skills of big rig drivers. Apparently the CHP has noticed this as well because I see a big rig pulled over by them almost every single day. Not that long ago all the big rig drivers were consummate professionals, the best drivers on the road. Those days are gone.

Another sign of a civilization in decline.

  2. A lot of them are foreign. Remember NAFTA?
Today I noticed a very heavy number of rucks on I-5 northbound out of Castaic, and they were not shy about using three lanes. That #2 lane (3rd from right) was congested and very slow due to all the big rigs in it. I can understand using 3 lanes when needed, at times. But, many act entitled to it.
