A man with multiple felony convictions was taken into custody Saturday night after deputies reportedly found him to be in possession of both narcotics paraphernalia and pepper spray, officials said.
Around 4 p.m. Saturday, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station were conducting patrol checks of business parking lots near the 24800 block of Orchard Village Road when they “saw a male adult on a couch inside a dumpster area,” according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the station.
“They recognized the individual as a person that the business had reported as trespassing on prior incidents,” Miller said.
As the deputies were making contact with the suspect, they noticed that he had narcotics paraphernalia “in plain view,” as well as a can of pepper spray, according to Miller.
“The suspect is prohibited from possessing pepper spray, as he has several prior felony convictions,” Miller said.
Deputies proceeded to arrest the suspect, 48-year-old Carlton Searcy-Cooper, of Newhall, on felony charges of illegal possession of tear gas, as well as trespassing and possession of drug paraphernalia.
He was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, where his bail was set at $26,250.

Searcy-Cooper was one of 22 other individuals reportedly arrested on drug- and alcohol-related charges between Friday, July 26 and Sunday, July 28, according to weekend arrest logs.
While this is the same number of similarly reported arrests as the weekend prior, there was a 26 percent increase in total arrests reported, according to officials.
Roughly 42 percent of reported arrests were for individuals who gave home addresses outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, while three were reported for homeless individuals.
