Canyon Country Man Who Fatally Shot Dog Sentenced To Six Years In Prison

A Canyon Country man charged with shooting his German Shepherd to death last year pleaded no contest Monday and was sentenced to six years in prison and five years of probation, officials said.

Christopher Ray Nard, 58, of Canyon Country, faces one felony count of cruelty to an animal with personal use of a gun allegation, according to Deputy District Attorney Bradley Lieberman with the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

Nard pleaded no contest on July 6 to one felony count of cruelty to an animal and admitted the personal use of a gun allegation, for a suspended sentence of six years in prison, two days in county jail and five years of formal probation, according to Ricardo Santiago, spokesperson for the D.A.’s Office.

The probationary terms include waving his jail credits upon a violation, 90 days of Cal Trans and 90 days of community service, according to Santiago.

Nard is also banned from possessing animals for 10 years, as part of the sentencing.

He was sentenced to complete 48 sessions of animal abuse counseling within two years of the July 6 court date, according to Santiago.

Continue his mental health counseling for two years from July 6,

Nard is required to attend three Alcoholics Anonymous (AA)  meetings per week for the first year of his probation, two AA meetings for the second year and one AA meeting for the remaining three years of his probation, according to Santiago.

The charges stem from Nard’s alleged involvement in an incident on July 9, 2019, in which Nard reportedly shot Shiloh, his German Shepherd, with a rifle, according to officials.

After the alleged shooting deputies set up a containment near the suspect’s house in the 19100 block of Delight Street, where he was believed to be barricaded, according to the LASD.

After a two hour standoff, deputies were able to determine Nard was able to flee the location.

Deputies were able to locate Nard the next day and took him into custody, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Nard pleaded not guilty to the charges against him in August of last year, according to District Attorney’s officials.

  1. Bradley Lieberman is handling a case for us of animal deaths in cruelty in the Santa Clarita Valley he’s wonderful hopefully our case get Justice real soon it’s going to trial when it’s over I’m sure the news and everyone will hear about it it’s quite a big case here anyway good he didn’t get his harshest sentence that I thought he should Bradley

  2. There is a typo in this story. Instead of suspected sentence of 6 years, it should say suspended sentence, which is to bad.

  3. There is also an omission; either in reporting or in sentencing.
Felons are forbidden to possess firearms.

  4. He’s not going to jail?! Well, maybe someone will get the chance to shoot that idiot in the head then! Hope so!

  5. And that’s why we can’t have nice things

  6. Headlines sell. Shame on the author. Sentenced was suspended. And shame on this animal killer, should be in jail.

  7. Now he can still hang out with Sexy Vegan!?☠️?

  8. An utter shame he’s not serving those measly six years, it could’ve been a way to contract COVID-19 and live in misery. I have no sympathy for pet killers.

  9. Clearly the headline proves that this station cannot accurately report the news. Sad.
