Canyons Aquatic Club Lawsuit Alleges Organization Ignored Sexual Abuse Reports

A lawsuit filed Wednesday against the Canyons Aquatic Club by the former head coach alleges the organization ignored reports of sexual abuse, officials said.

David Kuck filed a lawsuit in the Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging Canyons Aquatic Club did not act on allegations of sexual abuse by Swim Coach Jeremy Anderson, calling it a “shameless campaign to silence,” according to court documents.

The lawsuit outlines a total of eight complaints, including wrongful termination, breach of contract and labor code violations, according to the complaint.

Kuck claims he was wrongfully terminated by the Santa Clarita swim team after raising concerns over Anderson’s alleged abuse to the club board, according to the lawsuit.

Anderson was later arrested on charges of sexual abuse and child pornography, and then died days later in a Costa Rican hospital, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Victims Bureau.

In December 2017, detectives with the Special Victims Bureau began investigating the circumstances regarding the alleged sexual assault of a child that occurred between the years of 2006 and 2011 by his swim instructor in Santa Clarita.

The victim told detectives that he had been assaulted by Anderson, who was his swim instructor at an aquatics club in Santa Clarita, according to Deputy Medrano with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

The allegations were brought to the attention of the Sheriff’s Department by a representative from SafeSport. Safesport is an organization entrusted with the authority to respond to reports of sexual misconduct with the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Movements, according to Sheriff’s officials.

As the investigation evolved, detectives identified additional victims of the suspect, Anderson. The incidents with these multiple victims reportedly occurred at various locations between 2006 and 2017.

“Anderson’s conduct included having sexually explicit conversations with the victims and soliciting child pornography,” Medrano said.

Special Victims Bureau detectives presented the results of the investigation to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office on December 18, 2018. The District Attorney’s Office filed 19 counts of lewd acts with a child and possession of child pornography against Anderson, according to officials.

Detectives then learned that Anderson had fled from the United States before they were able to take him into custody. An arrest warrant was issued for his arrest at the time.

On Thursday, June 13, the United States Marshals Service and Pacific South West Fugitive Task Force assisted the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in locating Anderson in Costa Rica.

About a week later, detectives received confirmation from the US Marshal’s Office that Anderson had died while hospitalized.

Officials with Canyons Aquatic Club did not return requests for comment as of Thursday afternoon.
