Former L.A. County Sheriff Lee Baca Denied Supreme Court Appeal

The United States Supreme Court denied to hear the appeal of former Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca’s conviction on federal charges of obstruction of justice and lying to the FBI, according to court documents.

Baca had previously been sentenced to three years in prison for obstructing a federal investigation into corruption and civil rights violations at the jail that Baca supervised, according to a May 2017 report from CNN.

The former sheriff had been accused and convicted of lying to federal prosecutors and the FBI about efforts by deputies under his control to hide a jail inmate who was cooperating with the federal corruption probe.

Additionally, Baca reportedly ordered criminal investigations of the FBI agents conducting the investigation, according to an earlier statement from the US Attorney’s office.

At the time of his conviction in 2017, Baca was the 10th member of the Sheriff’s Department convicted in the obstruction scheme.

The 77-year-old former sheriff is reportedly dealing with the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, which he was initially diagnosed with in 2014.

Baca initially joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in 1965, and served as Los Angeles County Sheriff from 1998 to 2014.

“Rather than fulfill his sworn duty to uphold the law and protect the public, Lee Baca made a decision to protect what he viewed as his empire,” said Acting US Attorney Sandra R. Brown at the time of the conviction. “And then he took actions in an effort to simply protect himself.”
