Former Saugus High Substitute Teacher Pleads Not Guilty To Five Counts Of Lewd Acts Upon A Child

A former Saugus High School substitute teacher pleaded not guilty to sexually assaulting one of his female students over the past two months, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Monday.

David Cornish, 28, was charged with five counts each of lewd act upon a child, sexual penetration of a person under the age of 18, oral copulation of a person under the age of 16, and one count each of meeting a minor for lewd purposes, contact with a minor for a sexual offense and distributing or showing child pornography to a minor, according to Greg Risling, spokesperson for the office.

On Monday, Cornish pleaded not guilty to the charges, according to District Attorney Jackie Lacey.

Over the past two months, the defendant is accused of having an unlawful sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl he taught at Saugus High School. Cornish was arrested Wednesday, May 27 after the victim reported the relationship to investigators.

On Tuesday, May 26, investigators from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau began investigating the circumstances involving an unlawful sexual relationship between a  substitute teacher and his female student between the months of April and May 2020.

The victim disclosed to investigators that she had been involved in a sexual relationship with her substitute teacher, Cornish, according to Deputy Grace Medrano.

The  William S. Hart Union School District is “deeply concerned that one of our substitute teachers, David Cornish, was arrested and is expected to be charged with engaging in sexual misconduct with a Saugus High School minor student,” said a district spokesperson in a statement.

“The district strives to provide a safe educational environment for all of our students, and we are saddened and disturbed that one of our substitute teachers is being charged with this misconduct,” Hart district officials said.

The Hart District immediately suspended Cornish upon learning of the allegations, according to the spokesperson.

Pursuant to California law, upon receipt of a copy of the formal charge additional action will be taken, including possible immediate termination, and the matter will be reported to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

If convicted as charged, the defendant faces a possible maximum sentence of 16 years and six months in state prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Special Victims Bureau.

  1. Old news.
New, and more concerning, is the agenda for the Saugus Union School District to draw up a resolution in support of BLM. They’ve allowed two ultra liberal, anti-American board members to turn a simple board position into a political platform for anti-American policies. Shame on those two worthless people. Why don’t you focus more on the kids in the district and less on external drama that a large percentage of SCV residents don’t support it care about. Ridiculous, I’ll be keeping my kids distancing learning for the time being. SUSD turning into a circus.

    • We thought in today’s Liberal/progressive environment, all types of sex was OK, cool, acceptable !? He/they hear a different drummer drumming!? I’m OK, you’re OK, nothing is wrong, everything is right!? How dare you judge!! To each his own!? That’s opinionated!?

  2. I agree with the poster above. Just to add to the school discussion most of us parents are pretty disappointed in the constant push to do distance learning or a “blended” distance learning in the fall. We are asked to take surveys and participate in online meetings but the comments and chat are shut off on the online meeting. The virus is an excuse for our district to do less while still making the same amount of money. Ultimately what they are doing is making the parents homeschool while they collect a paycheck. Many of us work full time and do not have the time or resources to school our children full time. If that is going to be the case Where I am forced to teach my own children I might as well withdraw my children from the school district so the district doesn’t get that tax money.

  3. It’s a point where my kids did better distance learning than at school. That says something. You can yell defund police all day long but defund education is a better option at this point. Our teacher/student ratio is ridiculous. I can work with my kids after I get home and they learn twice as much in 1/3 the time. Cut teachers, cut the budget for schools, and push that money to whatever lame projects they want. Schools have failed us more than police.
Later SUSD. Home school without a liberal agenda…sounds nice.

  4. Today’s society is a front show!

  5. You people are insane. Full stop.

You are more concerned with a school district supporting their students and staff of color than you are predators getting hired to teach our children. This astonishes me. BLM isn’t politics, it’s pretty straight up a recognition that the black community, which has always been lesser in our thoughts and actions, finally gets recognized as mattering in society.

If you can’t see the inherent racism and asinine behavior in this, then we are in more dire straits than you can possibly know…

And this comment string is the wrong place to forward your agendas…

    • This POS was NEVER a substitute teacher for SUSD. He worked at Saugus High School which is pet of the Hart District. Your rants about SUSD have no place on this article

    • BLM is in fact political. It is a Marxist organization. The co-founder herself proudly states it in this video:

      youtu.be/Zp-RswgpjD8?t=420

    • BLM is politics. If you go to their site and try to donate, you are redirected to ActBlue, a fund raising arm of the democrat party. BLM’s number one priority is to defeat Trump in November. Anyone who supports BLM or donates to them is being played. Wise Up people.

    • Oh look another left wing boot licker. Let me guess…
-Weren’t born in the SCV and didn’t grow up here.
-Moved the family here though because the liberal dive city you left was crime ridden, broke, and generally not great.
-Now you’re here and you know what’s best for all of us who love this town and don’t want to see it become an extension of the SFV.

I’m probably right on target. We are in dire straits indeed Lee. This is the absolute right setting to bring this up because it’s all connected. There’s a reason Mike Garcia won and will win again, because we don’t want to become a democrat devastated city. So, the 5 South will take you to somewhere more appropriate if you’d like.

      • I don’t know who you are (because you are hiding behind a fake name) but let me address your comments…

Just because I wasn’t born in the SCV (or California) doesn’t make me less of a citizen than you are…I own my home, I pay my taxes, I go to CC meetings, I vote, I cried when the school on my street became a shooting statistic…I am as much a citizen as you are, even with my paltry 15 years in this town.

I moved here because we were looking to purchase our first home and had options…we felt that the school system, recreational and retail opportunities allowed us to fulfill our needs by living here and commuting to work instead of commuting to fun. Our decision had nothing to do with running away from anything and, instead, running to an area where we could buy and be near friends.

I only know that what is best for everyone is to live the life they want to live…and to treat people the way they should be treated. And if you think that that doesn’t include black people, well, that’s between you and whatever God you worship and whatever conscience you have.

As for the other comments from the others, BLM became political when people decided that black people matter less than they do. As I told a friend on Facebook: “I don’t think you understand what All Lives Matter means to the black community…and I don’t think you understand the blinding privilege it takes to push aside the BLM movement to explain to people why you think “ALM” is more important. Tell a breast cancer patient that all cancers matter…tell a Jew in 1939 Nazi Germany that all religions matter…tell a man whose house is burning down that all houses matter. You are a white man in 21st century America…OF COURSE all lives matter…you don’t want to be left out and you want to be inclusive. BLM is meant to demonstrate that this time it is the black people…next time it could be you.”

When you start thinking about others and stop thinking about yourself…your world changes.

  6. This article has more detail than required. There are kids out here.

    • Dave R.: They hear a lot worse on the streets, social media, listenIng to gangster rap(now PC called hip hop(to sell, sell, sell) and from friends & depending on the type of family environment their parent(s)!!

  7. All lives can’t matter until black lives matter…period! End of story. There is absolutely no valid argument that can support the opposite. The next point, there in fact, two racist board members. They have clearly voiced as such with their rhetoric. They need to resign immediately. Next, none of you non educators have a clue what teachers have been through the last several months- the amount of work is crazy, yet they keep on doing their very best in a non ideal situation. The last point and probably the most important in this post is that you’ll have lost focus on the article that was written. There is a true victim, a young lady who was robbed of her childhood, not once this academic school year, but three times. So, when we talk about defunding the police, educate yourself before jumping on a platform. It doesn’t mean get rid of the police, rather re-allocate funds. Focus on mental health, homelessness, drug addiction, education, assist inner city communities. With that, crime rate can be reduced, and let the police officers be peace officers. Remember why police were started in the first place- yep, to control slavery. So, all lives do matter, but for that to happen, we need to clean up the mess in front of us. It takes ALL OF US…it’s a collaborative effort!

  8. Preach that to the Liberal school administrators. The Liberals have ruined every city from Seattle to San Diego, Minneapolis, Chicago, Baltimore, etc. The entire education system is Liberal and look what they’re producing!

  9. This article is about a WSHUSD employee having sex with a minor. It’s about Saugus High School, not Saugus Union School District. It has nothing to do with BLM, it’s about a substitute teacher having sex with a minor student. This is about a felony, nothing about pushing liberal agendas. So really, who is the one pushing agendas here? Sounds to me Luke only the commenters who failed to read and understand the article.

  10. Jojo was a man who thought he was a loner
But he knew it couldn’t last
Jojo left his home in Tucson, Arizona
    For some California grass

    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, get back
Get back to where you once belonged
    Get back, Jojo

    Go home
