Deputy-Involved Fight In Stevenson Ranch Leads To Three Arrested On Multiple Felonies

Three suspects are facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges, including assault on a peace officer, after a vehicle code violation investigation escalated into a fight, officials said Tuesday.

On Saturday around 5:30 p.m., a deputy was conducting a patrol check of the Walmart shopping center on the 25400 block of The Old Road in Stevenson Ranch when he saw a vehicle with a vehicle code violation, said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The vehicle was parked behind the business in a secluded location, according to Sheriff’s officials.

When the deputy exited his patrol vehicle to approach, one the suspects, Ryan Coffey, reportedly exited the vehicle and immediately started to disassociate himself from it, allegedly saying he was not connected to “anything illegal in the car,” Miller said.

“He also displayed symptoms of narcotics intoxication. Coffey tried to flee and assaulted the deputy,” Miller said.

A struggle ensued, resulting in the deputy and suspect ending up on the ground.

While the deputy was attempting to detain Garrett Coffey, another suspect, Emily Coffey, then exited the vehicle and allegedly jumped on the deputy’s back, assaulting him, according to Miller.

A third suspect, Melissa Haro, then reportedly exited the vehicle and fled on foot.

Several assisting deputies responded and all three suspects were eventually detained, according to Sheriff’s officials.

“Narcotics and narcotics packaging items were found in the vehicle or in the possession of all three suspects,” Miller said.

Ryan Coffey, 32, of Castaic, is facing felony charges of assaulting a peace officer and possession of narcotics, and a misdemeanor charge of possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

Emily Coffey, 21, a transient, was charged with misdemeanor battery on a peace officer and felony possession of narcotics. In addition, she was charged with bringing narcotics into jail after arriving at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station allegedly still in possession of narcotics.

Haro, 31, of Canyon Country, is facing misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and narcotics-related offenses.

All three were arrested and transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail. Ryan Coffey’s bail was set at $291,000, Emily Coffey’s bail was set at $92,250 and Haro’s bail was set at $40,250, according to arrest records.

Ed. Note: One of the suspects, Ryan Coffey, provided false identification to deputies, and has been charged with an additional felony.

  1. It wasn’t Garrett Coffey, but his brother, Ryan Coffey. You might want to check your facts before printing false information

  2. You have the suspects name wrong!! The male suspects name is Ryan Coffey, he gave false identification posing as his brother Garrett Coffey (my husband). This error has already been fixed in court and the police station. Please correct this article ASAP, this is NOT Garrett Coffey.

  3. My name is Emerald Mayfield. I am Garrett and Emily’s sister. I live out of state and the only information I’m getting about this situation is from news outlets. I’m reaching out to you guys to let you know that you have the wrong guy. The man arrested was Ryan Coffey who is also my brother. He has been on the run for awhile now and has several warrants out for his arrest so when the police asked him to identify himself, he said he was Garrett. The police neglected to finger print him to find out he wasn’t actually Garrett and after this encounter, Garrett was even charged thousands for Ryan’s hospital bill. I work for a Law Firm out here in Utah and I’m working to resolve this. I’m only telling you this so that you can get in contact with Shirley Miller to straighten this out because Garrett is a good and honest man who like me, stays out of my family’s drama. And these local news outlets keep reporting the incident as Garrett Coffey which is ruining his reputation and spreading false information. I would appreciate if you would reach out to me via email which I’ve left for you.

    • FYI the owners of this radio station are dealing with the husband having coronavirus or suspected corona virus so you may want to contact them by phone
They are in Newhall on main street

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
