DUI Suspect Crashes In Walmart Parking Lot, Fights With Deputies

A DUI suspect was arrested Monday evening after he allegedly crashed into a pole and fought with deputies in the Valencia Walmart parking lot.

Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, deputies responded to a suspected DUI crash at the Walmart on the 27900 block of Kelly Johnson Parkway, said Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“Deputies arrived on scene and saw a vehicle had collided into a tree and cement light pole base. The suspect fled on foot,” Arriaga said.

Deputies were directed to the suspects last known location, according to officials.

“As deputies contacted the suspect, he became uncooperative and a brief struggle ensued,” Arriaga said.  “A short period later, the suspect was detained without further incident.”

During the investigation, deputies determined the suspect had been driving a vehicle while under the influence of an inhalant, Arriaga said.

Charles Burnsmann, 49, from Saugus, was arrested for driving under the influence, resisting/obstructing an officer and misdemeanor hit and run, Arriaga said.

Burnsmann remains in custody as of Tuesday afternoon, according to Arriaga.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
