The weapon used in the Saugus High shooting one week ago was determined to be a “kit gun,” officials said Thursday.
As the investigation continues into the Saugus High shooting, investigators have determined the .45 caliber pistol used was a kit gun, said Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva.
“The weapon used in the homicide was a kit gun, it was assembled from parts and had no serial number,” Villanueva said.
A student opened fire with the kit gun in the Saugus High School quad, killing two classmates and himself, according to Sheriff’s officials.
Multiple other students were injured in the Saugus High shooting, officials said.
The suspect grew up in a house where his father had weapons, according to officials.
“The father had six guns registered to him,” Villanueva said.

However, at one point all the weapons were lawfully removed from the home and legally destroyed, according to officials.
After the shooting occurred, a search warrant was issued at the suspect’s home, and investigators found additional firearms in the house which were also discovered to be kit guns, Villanueva said.
The Saugus High shooting is still under active investigation, and “the ‘why’ is still a mystery,” Villanueva said.

I’m sure we are all curious to why six firearms were removed from this home and destroyed. I’m sure once we find that out then it might shed some light on how a 16 year old had access to unregistered Kit guns in his Mothers home. As of 2016 by law you must register all Kit guns.
Uh….no. That would be July 2018. The fact that he had multiple kit or ghost guns doesn’t necessarily mean they were in violation of the law unless the reason for the original removal was extended beyond that time. Or he had a existing no fiireaem possession order up until his death. Many of those orders are temporary and expire even after firearms are removed
Here we go…. gun opponents will politicize this tragedy. “Kit” gun or not, no new laws would have stopped this senseless crime. A homemade gun is a weapon that the government does not know about. It is no more prone to pull its own trigger than a registered weapon. The fact is a child that needed help had access to weapons which should have been locked up. It is/was the responsibility of the parent(s) to secure any weapons in the home registered or not. There are already laws regarding this. Gun opponents will use this and all other future tragedies to chant “ban all guns” …as if an inanimate object took action on its own.
Maybe the guns were removed because the father was deceased? Maybe the Mother didn’t want them around? It’s all speculation. This was a really well liked kid according to interviews, in sports, had friends, including a girlfriend, it just doesn’t make sense. Prayers to everyone involved including his family. Take one day at a time. ?
LA Times published an article online last week about the suspect, stating that his father was arrested on suspicion for domestic abuse. Perhaps the guns were removed then.
