A convicted felon was arrested Sunday in Canyon Country after a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s deputy allegedly found him slumped over the wheel of his car in the middle of the street with several firearms — including an assault rifle — in the vehicle.

Karl Douglas Simon, 46, already had several felony convictions when he was arrested Sunday, after a deputy conducting a DUI investigation discovered a loaded firearm in his pocket, said Shirley Miller, a spokeswoman for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

The deputy found Simon stopped in the number 1 lane on eastbound Soledad Canyon Road at approximately 1:30 a.m. while responding to a separate domestic violence call in the area.

The deputy was driving with lights and sirens on, but the vehicle did not move from the middle of the road, Miller said. The deputy stopped behind the Lexus allegedly driven by the suspect to investigate.

“When he approached the vehicle, he could see signs of alcohol intoxication,” Miller said. “He started to investigate a possible DUI.”

When the firearm was discovered, the deputy searched the vehicle and discovered two more weapons in the vehicle.

“He also found in the vehicle an assault rifle and an additional firearm,” said Miller.

The guns were seized and Simon was arrested on suspicion of several counts, including DUI.

Simon is a resident of the Los Angeles area, Miller said, and it is unclear why he was in Santa Clarita Sunday morning.

Officials presented the case against him to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Tuesday. Simon faces at least three weapon felony charges, including felony possession of a firearm with a prior conviction.

Bail was set at $35,000, and Simon is expected to appear in San Fernando Superior Court for a preliminary hearing in the coming weeks.
