Murder Suspect In Newhall Shooting Had Weapons Charges Dropped As A Minor

One of the murder suspects in connection to the Newhall shooting Saturday was previously arrested as a minor on gun charges which were dropped.

Anthony Martinez Ortiz, 18, from Sylmar and a juvenile, whose identity is not being released were arrested in connection to the Newhall shooting that killed two Santa Clarita residents who were in a rival gang with the suspects, said Lt. Reynaga, with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau.

When Ortiz was a minor, he was arrested on firearm related charges, according to court documents.

Two months ago, prior to his 18 birthday, all charges were dropped, according to the court documents.

On Saturday, around 10:50 a.m. Ortiz and the other murder suspect allegedly shot and killed Cameron Stokes, 16, from Valencia and Brian Chevez, 25 from Santa Clarita, in a gated pool on the 27300 block of Silverado Street in Newhall, according to officials.

“It was a gang related shooting,” Reynaga said.

The two victims and suspects are believed to be from rival gangs in the area, according to Reynaga.

Deputies responding to the shooting, located a car matching the description of the suspects’ vehicle near Via Princessa and Sierra Highway in Canyon Country, according to officials.

A felony traffic stop was conducted, and both suspects were taken into custody without incident, according to Sheriff’s officials.

Ortiz was booked into the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station with bail set at $2,000,000, according to arrest records.

No information into the arrest of the minor has been made available, according to officials.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
