Newhall Pursuit Suspect Charged With Felony Evading, Reckless Driving

A Newhall pursuit suspect was arrested by deputies with Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station Saturday after evading police and driving recklessly in oncoming lanes of traffic, officials said.

Around 11:20 a.m. on Saturday, deputies received a call for a reckless driver, who was possibly under the influence. heading southbound on Newhall Avenue, according to Deputy Natalie Arriaga, spokesperson for the station.

A deputy was patrolling 13th Street near Railroad Avenue in Newhall when he observed a white Mazda violating several vehicle code violations, according to Arriaga.

“The deputy initiated his lights and sirens to conduct a traffic stop, however, the suspect ignored them and continued to drive, attempting to elude deputies,” Arriaga said. “A pursuit initiated during which the deputy lost visual of the suspect.”

Deputies later found the vehicle, a white Mazda Miata, abandoned on Placerita Canyon Road about a half-mile east of Sierra Highway.

The suspect’s father, who arrived on scene, told deputies the suspect had called him and asked him to be picked up after being chased by law enforcement, according to Arriaga.

After a short search of the area, deputies were able to locate the suspect hidden in a bush within proximity of the abandoned vehicle.

23-year-old Austin Belgau, of Newhall, was charged with felony reckless evading arrest and reckless driving, according to Arriaga.

Belgau was released on his own recognizance Sunday morning, according to arrest records.
