The school was placed on lockdown Wednesday after reports of a person with a gun at the community college around 5 p.m. All classes were cancelled while deputies searched the Valencia campus.
But shortly before 7 p.m., the campus was cleared with no weapon found.
“It’s over, they cleared the campus,” said Sgt. Chris Voda with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “There was no threat.”
He said deputies had reported that the incident was a case of mistaken identity in the dark, as a witness saw “a nursing student pick up a tree branch” and mistaking the wood for a gun.
Text alerts and emails were sent out to all COC students warning them to stay away from the campus while deputies put 20 staff members and around 2,000 students on lockdown.
The campus was hosting winter classes, which often have smaller class sizes than full semester courses.
This is a breaking news story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
