Pursuit Suspect Arrested After Foot Bailing Near Jakes Way

A 5 Freeway pursuit suspect was arrested Sunday near Jakes Way after fleeing from law enforcement, during which he was seen throwing a handgun out of his vehicle.

Around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, officers with the Central Los Angeles California Highway Patrol (CHP) Area initiated a pursuit on a tan GMC Yukon on Fletcher Drive at the 5 Freeway in Los Angeles, said Officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.

“The original want was for speeding and weaving,” Greengard said. “The driver of the vehicle headed north on I-5 from Fletcher Drive, throwing a green object out of the vehicle.”

CHP Newhall Units took over the pursuit on the northbound 5 Freeway at the 14 Freeway interchange, Greengard said.

“The pursuit continued north on I-5 and the suspect vehicle exited on Magic Mountain Parkway,” Greengard said. “The suspect vehicle turned east on Magic Mountain, and traversed over several city streets before stopping in a residential area at the corner of Jakes Way and Fahren Court.”

The 5 Freeway pursuit suspect foot bailed, and attempted to hide near one of the residences, according to Greengard.

Marcus Mattox, 47, from Valencia, was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station for felony evading, Greengard said.

Central L.A. CHP officers went back to the area where the object was thrown from the suspect vehicle and located a bright green towel with an unregistered loaded handgun wrapped inside.

About Louie Diaz

Louie was born and raised in Santa Clarita. At the age of two Louie lost his vision due to a brain tumor. However, Louie doesn't let blindness stop him from doing what ever it is he wants to accomplish. Growing up some of his favorite hobbies were wood working, fishing and riding bikes. Louie graduated from College of the Canyon in December of 2017, with a Broadcast Journalism degree. Growing up Louie has always wanted to be a fire fighter or a police officer, but because of his blindness Louie knew that wouldn't work. Louie has always loved listening to police and fire radio traffic, using a scanner, and he figured if he was going to listen to the scanner so much, he should do something with it.
