The number of drug- and alcohol-related arrests reported in Santa Clarita over the weekend increased by over 70 percent compared to the previous weekend, according to booking logs.
Between Friday, Oct. 18 and Sunday, Oct. 20, officials with both the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office made 37 arrests, according to weekend arrest records.
Of these arrests, 29 were related to drugs and alcohol, with 15 reported incidents of DUI, 13 instances of reported possession of a controlled substance and 1 reported arrest made for possession of narcotics paraphernalia, according to booking logs.
This represents an increase of slightly over 70 percent when compared to the previous weekend’s number of 17 reported drug- and alcohol-related arrests, according to officials.
Roughly 59 percent of arrests were made for people who gave home addresses outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, while three individuals were reportedly homeless.

While law enforcement officials responded to several drug- and alcohol-related incidents across the valley, those were not the only kind of reported crimes they handled over the weekend.
Around 6 p.m. Sunday, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station responded to a local Halloween store on the 26500 block of Carl Boyer Parkways after a woman reportedly attempted to steal over $1,000 worth of merchandise, according to Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the station.
After allegedly stealing several items, the woman then reportedly returned to the store.
“A quick-thinking employee disabled the electronic sliding glass doors so the suspect couldn’t leave,” Miller wrote in an official post Monday.
The woman, Cheyenne McGee, 23, of Pasadena, was taken into custody by responding deputies on two separate felony charges.
In addition to grand theft, McGee was also arrested on charges of vandalism after she allegedly damaged the glass doors in an effort to escape, according to Miller.
McGee was transported to and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station, where her bail was set at $40,000, according to booking logs.
