Over the past three years, the department has collected information on where the bike and pedestrian collisions have occurred most often and how certain violations led to those incidents.

“Extra officers will be on duty patrolling areas where bike and pedestrian traffic and crashes occur in an effort to lower deaths and injuries,” said a Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station news release.

Deputies plan to look for any violations made not only by drivers, but also bike riders and pedestrians alike, observing if anyone crosses the street illegally or fails to yield to drivers who have the right of way.

“Special attention will be directed toward drivers speeding, making illegal turns, failing to stop for signs and signals, failing to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks or any other dangerous violations,” said the release.

Along with the vehicle violations, Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station deputies plan to monitor the violations made by bike riders and pedestrians.

“Enforcement will be taken for observed violations when pedestrians cross the street illegally or fail to yield to drivers who have the right of way,” said the release. “Bike riders will be stopped and citations issued when they fail to follow the same traffic laws that apply to motorists.”

Deputies hope that these ramped-up and coordinated efforts might mitigate the rising number of bicycle and pedestrian fatalities, said the release.

“(The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department) have investigated 3,512 fatal and injury collisions involving pedestrians and bicyclists over the past three years,” said the release. “In 2013, California witnessed 701 pedestrians and 141 bicyclists killed, accounting for more than 28 percent of all traffic fatalities.”

  1. I still don’t think bicycles should be allowed on the road. Motorcycles are dangerous enough, but at least they can keep up with traffic.

What’s the worst that can happen from riding your bike on the sidewalk (and wear a helmet)? break a few bones?

    • IN THE STATE YOU WILL FOLLOW OUR LAWS===YOU COULD HIT A SLOW WALKING PERSON / FALL INTO ROADWAY / HIT A POLE / CLIP A CURB-CUT / HIT A DOG / BABY / OR A BLIND / HEARING LOSE PERSON===32 YRS. AS A PARAMEDIC / FIREMAN===A WORD TO THE WISE, O.K. ???===BILL
