Santa Clarita Weekend Arrests Rise More Than 30 Percent

The number of arrests in Santa Clarita over the weekend rose by 33 percent compared to the previous week as reopening continues and more people begin to venture out of their homes, officials said.

The total number of charges for the weekend came in at 32, a notable increase from the 24 arrests the week prior, according to arrest logs from the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Charges related to the possession of a controlled substance constituted the bulk of arrests for the weekend.

In total, 12 individuals were arrested on controlled substance charges, a decent upswing from the five similar charges the prior weekend.

The number of charges for driving under the influence was similar to last week, with five arrests in total.

Among the other arrests over the weekend were several for weapons-related charges including a Palmdale man who was arrested for possession of tear gas and a Santa Clarita man who was charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon or addict, according to the logs.

A variety of charges comprised the remaining arrests for the weekend, including two Canyon Country men who were arrested late Friday night for an illegal “speed contest”.

“A deputy observed two vehicles, a truck and a sedan, engaged in racing each other on Soledad Canyon Road Friday night around 9 p.m. The drivers were so focused ‘in the moment’ that they sped right past the deputy,” Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station Spokesperson Shirley Miller wrote. “The deputy caught up to them as they stopped at a red light. The light turned green and they took off again at high rates of speed, estimated to be 95-100 m.p.h..”

The deputy then conducted a traffic stop on both vehicles, near the Saugus Speedway.

“The drivers who were racing each other said that they didn’t know each other, admitted to going about 90 m.p.h. and one even commented it was ‘a bad decision,’” Miller wrote. “Both men, ages 21 and 23, were arrested for speed contest and transported to jail. Their vehicles were towed and impounded for 30 days.”
