Santa Clarita Weekend Crime Round-Up: Drug, Alcohol Crimes Increase

Over 66 percent of the arrests reported in Santa Clarita over the weekend were related to drugs and alcohol, a 10 percent increase in the number of such arrests since the previous weekend, officials said.

Between Friday, Feb. 7 and Sunday, Feb. 9, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and officers with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office made 39 arrests in the Santa Clarita Valley, according to weekend arrest records.

Of those 39 arrests, 26 were related to drugs and alcohol, with 13 reported instances of DUI, 12 arrests for possession of a controlled substance and three reported incidents of being under the influence or drunk in public.

The previous weekend saw fewer overall arrests at a total of 30, with 17 of those being drug- and alcohol-related. This weekend’s drug- and alcohol-related arrests represented 26 out of 39 total arrests.

A total of 20 of the arrests made were for individuals who reported having home addresses outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, while three were reportedly homeless, according to weekend arrest records.

In total, nine people were arrested on felony charges, which ranged from possessing narcotics in jail and possessing metal knuckles to grand theft auto and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
