Over 60 percent of the arrests reported in Santa Clarita over the weekend were related to drugs and alcohol, an increase in the number of such arrests since the previous weekend, officials said.
Between Friday, Jan. 17 and Monday, Jan. 20, deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and officers with the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office made 45 arrests within the Santa Clarita Valley, according to weekend arrest records.
Of those arrests, 31 were related to drugs and alcohol, with 17 reported instances of DUI, four arrests for possession of a controlled substance and five reported incidents of being under the influence or drunk in public.

The previous weekend saw fewer overall arrests at a total of 39, with 21 of those being drug- and alcohol-related. This weekend’s drug- and alcohol-related arrests represented 31 out of 45 total arrests.
These arrests reflect a roughly 15 percent increase in such crimes compared to the previous weekend. While there was a drop-off in drug- and alcohol-related arrests over the first weekend of 2020, the numbers have been steadily increasing throughout January, according to officials.
A total of 22 of the arrests made were for individuals who reported having home addresses outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, while eight were reportedly homeless, according to weekend arrest records.

In total, nine people were arrested on felony charges, which ranged from vandalism and felony possession to battery and attempted murder.
Two Santa Clarita residents were arrested Sunday and charged with attempted murder in connection with a Canyon Country shooting last Thursday, officials said.
During an altercation, the victim was allegedly shot by one of the suspects in the upper torso, and the suspects reportedly fled in a vehicle.
On Sunday, after a Special Enforcement Bureau operation the two suspects, Guillermo Martinez, 20, of Newhall, and Laura Sabedra, 21, of Canyon Country, were both taken into custody without incident.
Both suspects were both booked on a charge of attempted murder with bail set at $1,000,000.

Those 17 DUI arrests may have saved 17 lives. Everyone knows it’s stupid to drive intoxicated but intoxicated makes them stupid it seems.
What’s stupid is bars and restaurants here in SCV will keep serving alcohol to patrons as long as they don’t run out of money! Nobody cuts anybody off here unless they get violent, it seems. Businesses have to take more responsibility but they are only interested in making as much $$$ as they can! Since they won’t change their ways, I think Sheriffs need to watch the worst offenders’ parking lots closely, and bust drunks as they leave. Set up a thing where after a certain number of arrests, they seriously fine the businesses and then take their liquor licenses. Or something…. One thing is certain—something needs to be done with this! How soon we all forget that friend or family member who gets killed by drunk drivers, and return to those very bad habits again! How many have to die before something is done?! I mean, this goes on and on!
