While reported arrests and citations in the Santa Clarita Valley have remained steady, the number of reported drug- and alcohol-related arrests has increased, according to officials.
Between Friday, July 12 and Sunday, July 14, officials with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station and the California Highway Patrol Newhall Office reported 43 arrests and citations, according to weekend arrest logs.
This is also the exact same number of arrests and citations reported in the weekend prior, according to booking logs.
Of the 43 reported incidents, 24 were related to drugs and alcohol, with 11 instances of driving under the influence reported, seven incidents of being under the influence in public, and six instances of possessing a controlled substance, according to officials.
This represents a 25 percent increase in drug- and alcohol-related incidents compared to the previous weekend.
Roughly half of reported arrests were made for people who gave home addresses outside of the Santa Clarita Valley, while five were for transient individuals.

One individual, who was believed to be under the influence of a controlled substance, was arrested after allegedly picking a fight with deputies Friday.
Around 10:30 p.m. Friday, deputies were patrolling in Newhall when they saw a male adult running through lanes of traffic on Railroad Avenue.
“Deputies determined that the male adult was exhibiting the symptoms of being under the influence of a controlled substance, and was a danger to himself and to traffic,” said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. “Deputies attempted to detain the suspect for his safety, and the suspect became combative.”
After detaining the man, deputies called officials with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to treat his injuries at the scene.
“We got a call from the Sheriff’s Department regarding an injury,” said Jeremy Stafford of the Los Angeles County Fire Department in a previous story. “We did transport one patient to a local hospital in unknown condition.”
Witnesses at the scene described seeing at least a dozen vehicles with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. Deputies also reportedly escorted the transport carrying the injured individual.
The suspect, 31-year-old Islam Tantawy, of Saugus, was later arrested on felony charges of battery on a peace officer and misdemeanor charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance.
