SCV Water Vice President Resigns After Being Convicted Of Domestic Violence

Vice President of the Santa Clarita Valley Water Agency, Dan Mortensen, resigned on Tuesday after being convicted with domestic assault earlier this month.

Prior to Tuesday’s regular meeting, Mortensen from SCV Water resigned from his position after having been convicted of one count misdemeanor domestic violence in the Santa Clarita courthouse on March 7.

According to the agenda, the SCV Water board members do not have authority to remove Mortensen from his elected seat, however, they can vote on censoring and stripping him of his “vice president” position and title.

The board had stated that this action would be a “formal expression of the opinions of the board that a board member’s actions were improper.”

Prior to the Tuesday meeting, however, Mortensen resigned from his position.

In court, a jury determined that Mortensen was guilty of punching his wife on April 12, 2020 in their Newhall home. Deputies that night said they found his wife and daughter hiding behind a locked door.

Mortensen was given the chance to avoid trial and for the charges to be dropped by undergoing a 52-week diversion program, however he declined this, saying he was “running for office again in November ” and could  not be in domestic violence classes.

Since 2018, Mortensen represented District 3 which includes portions of Newhall, Valencia, Castaic and the SCV communities west of the 5 Freeway.
