A Sylmar man has been identified as the suspect who died after he jumped out of a stolen California Highway Patrol (CHP) vehicle during a high-speed pursuit Tuesday.
John Figueroa Jr., 32, from Sylmar was the suspect who died after jumping out of a stolen CHP vehicle, according to officials with the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Around 11:45 a.m. Tuesday, CHP officers received reports of Figueroa driving recklessly on the 5 Freeway, said Officer Josh Greengard, a spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office.
While officers were responding, Figueroa was involved in a traffic collision on the northbound 5 Freeway near Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic, according to Greengard.
When the first CHP officer arrived on scene to investigate, Figueroa jumped into the CHP car and took off, according to officials.
Other responding CHP officers initiated a pursuit on their partner’s stolen vehicle which went up the 5 Freeway through the Grapevine at speeds of near 100 mph, according to officials.
The pursuit then headed east on Highway 138.
After several attempts, CHP officers were able to successfully spike strip the stolen CHP vehicle on Highway 138 near 90th Street West, according to officials.
Moments later, Figueroa jumped out of the CHP vehicle while travelling at speeds nearing 60 mph.
As seen on TV, Figueroa landed on the highway, where CHP officers immediately started life-saving measures.
Figueroa was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to Coroner’s officials.

“…where CHP officers immediately started life-saving measures.” Was this before or after they dragged him by his arm across two lanes, jumped on his back, and placed cuffs on him? As seen on TV.
they moved him out of a traffic lane for the safety of the officers. Do you want them smacked by a car?
I see nothing wrong with the actions taken by the officers, they had NO idea what the guy was capable of even laying in the street, he very well could have had a weapon and shot one or more of them. Stop having sympathy for fools!
PS – if you think you’d handle it differently feel free to sign up for the academy.
They blocked the road so no officer was in danger. The guy wasn’t moving! Can’t shoot anyone if unconscious. Lets hope you never suffer from depression or one of your loved ones. I see many things wrong here as will police experts once this goes to trial. Bullies will keep bullying.
Isn’t it great when stories like this have such a happy ending?
What a good Christian you are. Happy Easter! Being happy for some unfortunate soul’s death. Sick.
Exactly!
No mention that the man was disturbed and had mental/emotional issues as reported by relatives either.
This guy was a SEVERE risk to himself and others. Had a bad day? WTF? Good news is no one innocent was harmed.
Build more mental institutions & jails with the “Bullet Train $$”. Too many Liberal wacko’s out in decent society!
