Thieves Steal Hundreds Of Dollars In Brass Vases From Eternal Valley

A Santa Clarita family has had several brass vases stolen from their family’s lot at Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary, in Newhall.

Over the last four months, the Keysor family has had three brass flower vases stolen from grave markers at Eternal Valley in Newhall.

“We have a family plot there for the Keysors,” said Kathie Kellar, a Santa Clarita resident and wife of former City Council member Bob Kellar. “My parents are buried there, my sister’s husband, two brothers and four nephews. We are all going to be buried there.”

Kellar’s sister first noticed back in June that one vase was missing, and two weeks ago noticed two more were stolen from the family’s plot.

“She checked other markers close by that were not ours and noticed those ones were missing as well,” Kellar said.

Each vase costs approximately $200 to replace, according to Kellar.

The family notified Eternal Valley about the vases being stolen, and were told that this has been happening to multiple families.

The brass is made out of copper and zinc, and can be melted down by thieves to access the metals.

Theft suspects commonly steal copper due to its value, whether it be from wire piping or catalytic converters.

  1. This has been an ongoing problem at Eternal Valley (and, I assume, other cemeteries) for years. My own parents’ vase was stolen and Eternal Valley replaced it with a plastic one. I find it hard to believe that there isn’t some way to create a surveillance system that can stop this from happening. It is extremely upsetting to family members!
While I’m a it, I thought I’d mention that, while it’s lovely that the Boy Scouts/Girl Scouts leave flags at the graves of veterans for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day, this year, I happened to be there on flag placement day and witnesses girls doing somersaults near graves. I completely blame the adult supervision, or lack of., for allowing this to happen,

    • Three vases at $200 is a $600 crime. The current Democratic party control of California has decided that is no longer a crime. If anyone is caught by a surveillance system they will be released, with zero bail, to commit more crimes. This is an ongoing problem everywhere.

  2. The headline should say thousands of dollars or hundreds of brass vases, not hundreds of dollars. Liberty Garden has had almost all vases from plots near the road stolen. Literally hundreds of vases have been stolen.

  3. Very sad, my dad is in the veteran’s part of the cemetery. I just can’t believe how low some people would go to rob a cemetery.

  4. They should switch to high quality plastic or glass type vases, and side step the metal theft problem.
