Vanguard Protection Keeps Newhall Assault Victim And Bystanders Safe

A Vanguard Protection patrol officer was able to prevent an armed assault suspect from causing further harm to the public in Newhall on Monday.

In the early morning on June 7, an on-duty Vanguard Protection patrol officer was able to establish a perimeter around an assault suspect in Newhall and call for backup to prevent the alleged assaulter from harming members of the public.

Patrol officer Shawn A. Saathoff was flagged down by an elderly man at around 4 a.m. while driving near the intersection of Railroad Avenue and Market Street in Newhall, according to officials with Vanguard Protection.

The man claimed that he had just been assaulted by a male armed with a metal pipe who was now in a parking lot behind a building just north of the intersection, swinging the pipe and threatening bystanders, representatives said.

Saathoff then entered the parking lot and saw a “sweaty man” threatening bystanders, screaming incoherently and smashing the belongings of the alleged assault victim with a large metal pipe, officials said.

The patrol officer kept the victim safe and established a perimeter around the area to prevent bystanders from entering the parking lot, according to Vanguard representatives.

Saathoff called law enforcement for backup, and deputies with the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station arrived a short time after the call went out, officials said.

The suspect allegedly charged deputies before being subdued by law enforcement officials and taken into custody, representatives said.

Vanguard Protection Services provides private security patrol for various services, including patrol and response, alarm response, parking enforcement and traffic control, school patrols, active shooter response, K-9 units, special events, security consulting and executive protection.
