A Newhall man was arrested early Tuesday morning on multiple felonies including identity theft after a routine traffic stop, officials said.

On Tuesday around 12:30 a.m., a patrol deputy observed a Honda sedan on Wiley Canyon Road that had no license plates, said Shirley Miller, spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

“The deputy conducted a traffic stop to warn and/or cite the driver,” Miller said.

When deputies made contact with the driver he was unable to provide registration paperwork or proof of insurance.

“Through his field investigation, the deputy determined that the car was one that was reported stolen out of the Los Angeles area,” Miller said.

Upon inspecting the inside of the vehicle, the deputy found heroin and drug paraphernalia, along with a driver’s license and a credit card that did not belong to the suspect, Miller added.

“Ironically, the suspect, a 29-year old male from Newhall was also found to have a felony $100,000 warrant in the system for auto theft,” Miller said.

The deputy placed Edgar Nunez, 29, from Newhall, under arrest on the warrant, along with new charges of grand theft auto and identity theft, both felonies as well as possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia, both misdemeanors, according to Miller.

Nunez was transported and booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station jail with bail set at $136,250, according to arrest records.
