Although it’s hard to predict when fires will erupt, those who are prepared in advance can have some peace of mind knowing they’re ready to evacuate at a moment’s notice. There are even some steps residents can take to lower the risk that they’ll lose their house if a fire breaks out nearby.

The Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition recommends local residents and business owners pay attention to the vegetation and outdoor furniture surrounding their home or business. By getting rid of dead, dry plants, keeping gutters clear and keeping up with roof maintenance, the risk posed by flying embers can be reduced.

There are guidelines put in place by the National Fire Prevention Association to help inform homeowners and business owners about steps they can take to lower their risk of property loss during a wildfire.

Additionally, Santa Clarita residents can prepare for evacuation by preparing disaster kits in case a wildfire or other natural disaster poses a danger to their neighborhood.

Disaster kits usually contain three days worth of food and water along with various other survival tools and supplies. It’s also important to put important medicines and paperwork in an easily accessible place in case the household has to evacuate on short notice.

Along with preparing for property damage, it’s important for residents to have an exit strategy in case their homes or workplaces are in imminent danger. Families can discuss emergency evacuation plans with their children and plan multiple ways to exit the house.

Because roads may be closed in an emergency situation, the Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition also recommends having more than one evacuation route planned.

Finally, Santa Clarita residents may wish to research what charitable organizations exist to help those who have lost property due to wildfire damage. The Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition has worked with many non-profit organizations, such as Santa Clarita Grocery, to help those in need of fresh groceries and other supplies in times of crisis.

Wildfires are a fact of life in California. Thankfully, with some preparation, Santa Clarita residents can take steps to lower their risk and protect themselves. Interested parties can visit the Santa Clarita Disaster Coalition for more information on how they’re helping local charities coordinate in times of crisis.
