Carl Goldman Continues To Test Positive For COVID-19 In Coronavirus Quarantine: Part 26

KHTS Owner Carl Goldman continues to test positive for COVID-19 as he remains in coronavirus quarantine in Nebraska.

Back In The States With The Coronavirus – Day 35 (Tuesday)

The grim reaper reappeared. He even announced himself as the grim reaper as he knocked on my door. Apparently, my doctor has been reading my daily journal. His incredible bedside manner is matching my sense of humor.

His Post-it Note, green this time, showed I was still positive with the coronavirus, COVID-19. He was frustrated. I just took it as another sign I’m not ready to return to Santa Clarita for a while. Besides, I hadn’t yet tasted the Nebraska delicacy, Runza.

I’m frustrated but understanding my body is shedding the virus slowly. There are others from our Diamond Princess ship also quarantined here at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha who are experiencing the same slowness. There are even more people from our ship, quarantined at Travis and Lackland Air Force Bases, who are also struggling to rid themselves of the virus.

My doctor and I discussed my traveling to Santa Clarita to be quarantined at my home. That option is not possible because my wife, Jeri, never had the virus. If I returned home, I could pass the coronavirus, COVID-19 onto her, even though she never picked it up from me when quarantined together on the Diamond Princess.

The virus continues to spread in the States. Worldwide, more people are being cured of the virus each day than getting it. We need to remain calm, but proactive. Many large-scale events are being cancelled, schools are closing, and other precautions are being implemented to keep the virus from spreading.

Yesterday I mentioned if Cher or Kim Kardashian got pregnant during the corona scare, they probably would name their child Corona or maybe COVID-19.

Readers took issue with my remark, claiming I didn’t realize Cher was 73. Having stood in line on numerous occasions at our Vons’ grocery store in Sand Canyon, I am wiser. I’ve seen numerous headlines in the National Enquirer showing pictures of women far older than Cher nursing quintuplets. Cher has plenty of time.

I was interviewed on The Today Show this morning. While my Skype connection was in cue, waiting my turn to go live, my nurse came into my room to do my swab test. She stuck the swabs deep up my nostrils. Luckily it wasn’t my turn to have a swab placed up my rear for my clinical study or Maria Shriver and company might have viewed even more than they could handle.

Diane Green sent me a picture of a toilet. The toilet paper roll next to it had a padlock on it. Earlier in the week she sent me a picture of the “claw” arcade game. Instead of prizes to grab, dozens of rolls of toilet paper were stacked, waiting to be delicately picked up by the claw. Funny.

Ron Entrekin sent a cartoon of a man with his dog. The man had a dog cone protecting his face. His dog pointing at the cone said, “It’s for your own good, you have to stop touching your face.” Also, very funny.

Valerie Geller shared a headline, “Conference on the coronavirus, COVID-19 cancelled.”  I can’t make this stuff up.

Another reader informed me I was mistaken about not getting diarrhea with the virus. Allegedly one corona patient in New Jersey picked up diarrhea. I’m betting he may have eaten that Ding Dong left in his cupboard during the Eisenhower administration. His diarrhea may have nothing to do with the virus. Just saying.

Other readers are asking who is paying for my stay in quarantine. We are not getting billed during our stay at Nebraska Medicine.

“60 Minutes” asked to interview me through my window while in quarantine. A crew spent a few hours outside figuring out logistics. I’ll be interviewed tomorrow by host Bill Whitaker. Bill has been on many dangerous missions before, but I suspect even he will be glad we’ll be separated by double-paned protective glass.

My wife Jeri is juggling a lot. She’s catching up with her work at the radio station after being gone for over six weeks. She’s dealing with the minute by minute changes of the virus protocol, as more events are cancelled. And she’s handling all her chores at home and managing my responsibilities like my favorite, picking up the dog poop from the grass in our backyard. She’s a trooper.

I never thought I’d miss picking up dog poop, but after being quarantined for 35-days I can honestly say I’d pick up the dog poop in our entire neighborhood for an opportunity to be outdoors.

As I turn in for the night, I complete a final phone call with my wife. We’re both exhausted. I’m thankful she can get to sleep early tonight. I’m even more thankful it’s The Today Show, 60 Minutes and GQ Magazine interviewing me this week and not the National Enquirer.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  1. Carl,

You are a genuine trooper. I am not sure I could do what you are doing now. I take my hat off to you

I sincerely hope you are able to kick this thing and get back to a normal existence.

    Blessings,

  2. I am sorry you are dealing with this but I am thankful for your first hand account. You will be home soon.

  3. Hang in there! You are a trooper and will come out of this for the better! We are all routing for you here in your home town. Best,

  4. Bill Hemmer quickly mentioned you by name today on his show. He remarked that he interviewed you on Tuesday, with his thoughts that you recover very soon. – nice of him to take the time on national tv to wish you good thoughts!

I’m not a fan of burritos (heresy?) – there is other great food to try in Omaha once you spring your release!

Now you have competition! – Tom Hanks and wife are now confirmed to be positive for Coronavirus. Your interviews may dry up!

  5. Thank you for sharing all of this. My son told me he had jury duty with you once, and it was nice to know you. Please keep up your spirits!

  6. Wow..GQ, The Today Show and 60 Minutes…And two ensembles to choose from. Remember Carl…mix and match…mix and match?

  7. Praying for you Carl.

  8. Bless you Carl. Hang in there and know there are many who are praying for you and Jeri. Love your never ending sense of humor!

  9. I’ve been following you. Thank you for your daily letters.

Question. Most people are quarantined for 14 days. Have you asked why you are quarantined for over a month? Should we be worried a 2 week isn’t enough. Much respect. Just asking.

  10. Carl, can wel talk about poop for a bit? I realize it’s embarrassing, bt I want you to get out of there fast and get a better understanding of this virus. So there is a WHO summary of the virus, it’s about 10 days old, but it is authored by scientists and does mention that about 5% of those infected do get diarrhea. So consider yourself lucky. Now more about pooping and toilets. In the earlier parts of your blog (I read them all), you mention that the handle on the cruise ship was hard to flush, and you often flushed it, while Jeri sometimes did not. Is it possible that dirty hands may be involved here? Or during the times when you did not flush at night because of the noise, do you think it is possible that the ventilation in the ship was circulating bad air around as a possibility? What other differences can you think of on that ship were different between you and Jeri? diet? drinks? did one of you always open the door to greet the food delivery, or cleaning folks, when they came? Is it possible the volumnous amounts of Gatorade are nourishing the virus? Can you ask them to put you on OJ or water and vitamins/electrolyte pills instead?

I’m hoping you get out of there soon and start showing some negatives.

    • Carl, I too am very curious how you got the virus and your wife did not and what the correlation is between those that get it and those that do not.

Dr. Oz makes good points to consider and I’m wondering if you could tap Mr. Bill Gates to use the AI he has to start analyzing the cases we are privy to in the US and abroad? If Clorox is effective with this virus is there something similar, but not harmful that can be applied topically to some of the areas where the virus resides?

As soon as I feel a cold coming on I drink Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) and I either don’t get sick or get better quickly. Whether this is in my head or real doesn’t matter to me because it works and I’m curious if your wife takes ACV?

I wish you the best and pray the great minds of our nation with all the technology we have can help you and all the others inflicted with this illness get better quick!

    • During the SARS outbreak there was a famous super spreading incident where an index patient had diarrhea and flushing the toilet created aerosols and spread the disease to several people staying on the same floor of the hotel. If his friend Jerri, who seems to have been the first infected, had used his bathroom, he might have been exposed when he flushed the toilet. Though there are several other routes of infection.

It might be interesting to test Jeri for antibodies. It might be that she was exposed. but fought off the virus.

  11. Hang in there Carl! America is praying for you and Jeri. Thank you for giving all of us a look into what we all might face soon enough.

  12. Alright, Carl. Enough is enough! Think negative. Negative test, negative test, negative test. Rest and recuperate, and come home soon. Best wishes!

  13. I am very thankful for your journals. I am so sorry you are going through this. I also hope you get a Runza soon! I might also suggest that when you are allowed to come home, you may request that someone pack you a box that has a case of toilet paper, Clorox wipes, paper towels, and dried beans. Then check that box as a checked bag on the airline. I’ll bet there is no Purcell in Omaha, and since it is flammable, probably can’t be put in checked luggage.

Stay safe, think good thoughts, and shed that virus!

  14. Just wondering – why can you not go outside?? Are you so contagious that they couldn’t put a mask on you and even one of the hazmat suits and let you get a little fresh air? You feel strong enough to walk all those steps in your room – why not walk outside? Can the virus really exist in the outside air so effectively that someone would get ill? It seems like fresh air might be good for you…..

  15. Hi Carl, have you and or your doctors considered that you may be reinfecting yourself? Can the virus live on your hat or toothbrush? Have they given you a new toothbrush? We always throw our toothbrush away after being sick. Good Luck uncovering why you are still test positive. Stay Strong! I hope this ordeal is over for you very soon!

  16. Carl I’m so sorry you are still testing positive for this virus. You have a good wife at home holding down the fort so just get better soon so you can be reunited. Positive thought going your way.

  17. Hi Carl,
As Santa Clarita ex pats, we’ve been following your posts from the beginning with Jeri videoing on the ship. I am very curious about a few things and wonder if they will be mentioned on 60 minutes. When you finally get released and head home, why would your wife possibly catch it from you if you tested negative 3 times. I’m confused on that front and why you would need an additional 2 wk quarantine if you’re cleared? And if everyone else getting tested for this virus gets one test, negative or positive, that’s it, they go home and in 2 weeks are out playing with no retest. If everyone was tested as often as you, would there be a lot more people with one day positive and the next day negative and the next day positive again? What are they telling you about this besides taking long to shed. Is it a thing like MRSA that always stays in your nostrils? Inquiring minds wanna know. And cheering for you!

  18. Hi mr.Goldman
I have been praying for you. You used to come through my checkout line many times when I was cashier at vons Sand Canyon.
Thank you for your honesty and for you sharing this journey with us. You may not know it but you encourage many people to not be afraid.
God is with you… keep the faith?✝️

  19. Ha! I found the rest of them. I’m over here swearing because like a moron I trimmed brush in the winter and am now covered in poison oak- which is miserable…and then read this and think- I should be grateful I had the opportunity to get poison oak!

I tried to mail you a copy of my book-for a good laugh a few weeks ago, unfortunately the Amazon driver couldn’t find the quarantine unit. Meh. They eventually gave up and returned it.

  20. I’m so sorry you’re still testing positive. I have to tell you, your blog is one of the only things keeping me calm about this whole ordeal. Initially I was alarmed that no one was hearing from patients, and were they actually surviving? In one way, at least you were one of the first cases in the US so you received the care that has been needed (but from the sounds, it hasn’t been all that much thankfully), and you’ve hopefully gotten this whole thing over with early on.

Hang in there. I imagine soon they’ll be kicking you out to make room for the more severe cases as they start to roll in.

  21. Mr. Carl, thanks so much for your wonderful blog. I’d like to send you a get well card, but am having trouble getting the info I need to address it correctly to you. Could you possible have your people let me know how to address this card? I would greatly appreciate it!

  22. Get well soon Carl, thank you for ur blogs and interviews on keeping us updated..

  23. Carl,

You are a hero! Though as much as I want to see your daily blog updates, I sometimes do wonder if you are working too much on your blogs and interviews with Radios/TV, thus became exhausted every day which slows down your recovery?

I will keep praying for your recovery. In the mean time, please rest well and I am OK with not seeing you update blogs every day. Take care!

  24. Hi Jeri and Carl, You are my two new favorite people! Your positivity and perspective keeps me centered and sane. Loved your latest video, Jeri. I, too, am practicing gratitude and capitalizing on how to get through this with humor and grace. Glad to hear you have such a wonderful support system. I would love to adopt you. Or maybe you could adopt me! I hope this makes up for the stoopid haters. You are authentic and it’s so refreshing. Thank you for going outside your comfort zone to keep the rest of us informed and reassured. Thinking of you and hoping for a reunion soon.

  25. You’ve always been a positive person. But perhaps with these tests you should not be so positive.
I hope and pray for the best for you.
Did your friend who got fired for house sitting correct the problem?

  26. When did you have Guilliane borre ? I had it after a flu shot.

  27. Thank you so much for sharing your journey! We’re praying for negative COVID results and you getting home to your family! Thankful for you!

  28. I just wanted to say thank you for your updates. As an SCV native living in Japan, it was quite informative reading of your experiences on the ship. As this pandemic progresses, these personal accounts are quite valuable and I hope that future books on this outbreak use your material to illustrate the personal experiences of those caught up in historic events.

  29. Carl thank you for your blogs and keeping us informed as to how you are doing. Hope you will be tested negative soon and are able to come home..
Saw you on Channel 5 this morning. You are one strong person.

  30. Carl, I always enjoy reading your updates and pray you are home very soon.
You are a gifted writer, among other talents. A couple of items:

Rebecca Frasure, a 35 year old woman, who was on the Diamond Princess tested positive on February 6th and taken to a hospital in Japan. It took her nearly a month to test negative. She believes because she has Multiple Sclerosis, it took her longer to shed the virus. She is back home now, and like Jerri, her husband never tested positive.
Also, your reader who mentions that diarrhea can be a symptom is correct.
This is from Business Insider on February 12, 2020:
“A handful of patients developed diarrhea before a fever, which raises the possibility that the virus could be transmitted through feces.” One of the Diamond Princess, guests an elderly woman had that symptom and was not removed right away because she didn’t fit the typical symptoms. Also, a patient in Wuhan infected many healthcare workers early on because they did not realize he had the virus because that is not a standard presenting symptom.
From the New York Times: “The patient who infected so many health workers had been placed in a surgical ward because of abdominal symptoms, and the coronavirus was not initially suspected. Four other patients in that ward also contracted the disease, presumably from the first patient.” Here is the full New York Times article:

  31. It’s been a pleasure following you. Glad to hear you’re still feeling well. And keep the humor up, as you know, what else can you do at a time like this?

  32. Your mental fortitude and resilience are very admirable. We can all learn from you. You are in my thoughts. Hope you will get the negative results very soon

  33. Carl,

You are a real trooper. It amazes me how upbeat you are through this whole ordeal. What the heck do you do to pass the time? I would be going bananas. Stay strong, good luck buddy.

    Best wishes,
    King Nugos

  34. Thank you so much for your good humor and perspective. You probably have calmed me down more than anything else I’ve seen or read. You appear to be a really good guy. Hope you recover as soon as possible! And thank you for all you were doing.

  35. You are like an atom that lost an electron. You a still quote positive. Keep up the good cheer.

  36. Throw your toothbrushes away after each use.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
