Carl Goldman Shares Coronavirus Story On ‘60 Minutes’ As Longest Quarantined American

Carl Goldman shared his coronavirus, COVID-19, story on “60 Minutes” as the longest quarantined American at over four weeks.

60 Seconds On “60 Minutes” – DAY 49 (Tuesday)

On Sunday my CBS “60-Minute” interview with Anchor Bill Whittaker aired. It’s a good thing I didn’t have any popcorn by my TV. One kernel and I’d be done.

The CBS crew had spent all morning setting up to shoot me through my glass quarantine window at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. Bill Whittaker crouched while I stood on a chair so we would both be at eye level. He spent close to an hour interviewing me. “60-Minutes” spent 60 minutes to produce 60 seconds of content. Funny.

A few days after I arrived in Santa Clarita to begin my self-quarantine, CBS’s “Inside Edition” visited our home and conducted an extensive interview. More than 60 seconds made it to the airwaves.

As the longest quarantined American, having recovered from the coronavirus, COVID-19, my belief is Congress needs to finalize the stimulus package, hopefully later today. The incentive needs to be on businesses keeping our employees on payroll so the rebound can be quicker once life starts moving again. We need a strict national quarantine over the next few weeks so the number of virus outbreaks can stabilize. That way we can return to normal quickly. We don’t need to follow in Italy’s shoes.

While we are all isolated, Jeri and I recorded a brief video giving tips on enduring a quarantine.

We’re now discussing extending the quarantine past Easter. The Easter bunny will be quarantined.

My wife, Jeri, loves to decorate our house for every holiday. Halloween goes up right after Labor Day. Christmas is complete five minutes after Halloween has ended. It stays up until Groundhog Day. This weekend, Easter displays were put up at the Goldman home. It’s late for us, but with the Easter bunny quarantined, we might have baskets and eggs around our living room until the Fourth of July.

My wife also brought in our professional outdoor Christmas light installer. Robert Linn has been installing our lights for decades. Jeri heard (probably from the Hallmark Christmas channel) people were turning on Christmas lights during these ‘“dark times” to spread cheer.

Years ago, I would struggle to install our outdoor lights. Balancing precariously on my ladder, I would staple the string of lights reminiscent of a painting by Picasso. Nothing was straight. Lights would point in every direction. One string would not work. My futile efforts were long before Chevy Chase reenacted my disastrous exploits in “Christmas Vacation.” So now Robert puts up and takes down our outdoor lights. I still struggle with our Christmas tree. Luckily Hallmark didn’t make that suggestion as well. For COVID-19 quarantine, it’s just outdoor lights. So far.

So many wonderful friends welcomed me home this week. My hairstylist, Karen Moniz, came by to cut my hair. It hadn’t been touched since early January. My efforts to trim while isolated in quarantine were futile. Karen used a straight edge and tree pruning shears.

In addition to cutting my hair, Karen brought me a gift. You guessed it, toilet paper.

We also received a huge case of oranges, courtesy of Sunkist, who has their headquarters in Santa Clarita. I’ve been enjoying their oranges for days.

Omaha Steaks sent a supply of their premium steaks. It will be fun to fire up the grill once the rains subside.

Our friends, Stella and Jim Pilarski, sent over hamburgers and fries from Route 66. The restaurant’s owner, George Thomas, personally delivered it. George is a former cop and showed no fear greeting me at my front door. In addition to a delicious dinner, George brought me his personal special gift, a wrapped bottle of Gatorade. So many folks are being so kind, thoughtful and amusing.

  1. Harris from Newhall asked me why I continued my quarantine at home, or am I doing self-isolation so my neighbors don’t freak out. She also wants to know if I can get the novel corona virus, COVID-19, again.

I’ve been told by Nebraska doctors and the CDC, I will not get the virus again for many, many months. The experts don’t know if immunity can last for years or a lifetime.

I chose to self-quarantine because people were freaking out when Jeri arrived home two weeks earlier. She never had the virus. Experts should be studying my wife to see how her body is combatting the coronavirus, COVID-19. This idea has been raised by many people. I plan to stay isolated until Los Angeles County lifts its restrictions.

Our family friend, Andrew Milder, shared a treasure. I love American history and I love the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. Here’s a letter the brilliant author wrote while quarantined during the Spanish flu. I appreciate his reference to Hemingway and Zelda. It’s priceless — enjoy:

A LETTER FROM F. SCOTT FITZGERALD, QUARANTINED IN 1920 IN THE SOUTH OF FRANCE DURING THE SPANISH INFLUENZA OUTBREAK:

Dearest Rosemary,
It was a limpid dreary day, hung as in a basket from a single dull star. I thank you for your letter. Outside, I perceive what may be a collection of fallen leaves tussling against a trash can. It rings like jazz to my ears. The streets are that empty. It seems as though the bulk of the city has retreated to their quarters, rightfully so. At this time, it seems poignant to avoid all public spaces. Even the bars, as I told Hemingway, but to that he punched me in the stomach, to which I asked if he had washed his hands. He hadn’t. He is much the denier, that one. Why, he considers the virus to be just influenza. I’m curious of his sources.

The officials have alerted us to ensure we have a month’s worth of necessities. Zelda and I have stocked up on red wine, whiskey, rum, vermouth, absinthe, white wine, sherry, gin, and lord, if we need it, brandy.

Please pray for us.

I wonder if F. Scott had enough toilet paper.

Renee Kennedy, owner of Earth Baby, specializing in all things natural for your baby, had a special shirt made for me.

I love it.

As I turn out my light, I pray Congress will stop the political posturing for once and do the right thing. Chuck Schumer assures us we’re on the two-yard line. Now if we can just give the ball to the Eagles quarterback, Carson Wentz.

(Editor’s Note: It looks as if the Senate will approve the coronavirus stimulus package today).

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  1. At least you’re at home, and healthy, and can move about your home. Glad to see you’re still writing. Ya look great!

  2. We are so happy to hear you are finally home! Keeping you in our prayers.

  3. You look good. Happy you are still writing, enjoy it.

  4. You’re becoming the new star at Fox. Yesterday while getting ready for the opening markets, I saw your interview with the “Money Honey”, Maria Bartiromo on Fox Business.

Now that the Senate has passed the very, very huge stimulus bill – when the House takes it up, I’m certain the Democrats will try to sneak in their pork, unless Pelosi shuts down any opposition – and she is under enormous pressure to get this passed and on to the President’s desk.

I certainly can use the stimulus money to combat the teachers union fight to eliminate Proposition 13 protections, and their over zealous and hideous campaign to increase commercial real estate taxes.

  5. Luka,

I didn’t say that Democrats are not Americans – it’s their proposals are off the walls – $25 million for Kennedy Center and wording/funding in a stimulus bill for Planned Parenthood to fund loans for abortions?
If those supposed clinics need a loan – they should reach out to their base for donations.

My very literate daughter broke it to me…

  9. Thank you for keep writing! I’m really glad you are already at home with your wife and that you are healthy!!! Hugs from Texas!!!

  10. As I read F. Scott Fitzgerald’s letter listing his stockpile of beverages, I, too, wondered about his supply of toilet paper. Great minds…

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
