Coronavirus COVID-19 Patient Carl Goldman Continues Path To Recovery: Part 20

Coronavirus COVID-19 patient Carl Goldman is continuing his recovery in Nebraska, as his wife, Jeri Seratti-Goldman, is back home in Santa Clarita after testing negative at the end of her second 14-day quarantine.

Back In The States With The Coronavirus – Day 28 (Tuesday)

My wife, Jeri, spent her first full day in freedom, going back to work at our radio station in Santa Clarita, California. Our staff greeted her with amazing, welcoming tears and hugs.

I sit, still quarantined at Nebraska Medicine in Omaha. I get to wait until tomorrow to be tested again for the coronavirus, COVID-19. The virus is still active in my body.

Another one of the 15 patients quarantined here from the Diamond Princess returned home today. Ten of us remain quarantined. The 10 of us are happy for the five who left. Most are spouses. No one seems to have any regrets of their spouse leaving.

We are no longer receiving updates on totals of passengers and crew from the Diamond Princess who picked up the virus.

As of today, Reuters news is reporting 706 passengers and crew have the virus. I believe that the number is higher. I’m not certain if that number includes my friend, Mark Jorgensen, who didn’t test positive for the virus until the tail end of his quarantine at Travis Air Force base, near Sacramento, California.

Reuters may not have even counted me in that number since I didn’t have any signs of the virus until two hours into our flight back to the States in our military 747 cargo plane.

Six passengers have died from our ship. We now have nine deaths in Washington State. The virus is tragic; we need to remain proactive, but not panic.

Today the CDC informed us there were 1,000 new cases of the coronavirus, COVID-19, over the past 24 hours. That’s the bad news. The good news is 3,000 patients who had the virus were released today. The CDC is being aggressive in combatting the virus, trying to buy extra days to keep the virus contained. Each day brings us closer to warmer weather. This virus prefers cold environments.

Each day also allows the CDC to gain a better understanding of how the virus spreads, and eventually find a cure.

My friend, Coach Ron Tunick, shared our local Costco in Canyon Country was out of masks, water bottles and toilet paper. I may not want to invest in any travel-related industry stocks right now, but I believe purchasing a few shares of Charmin might be worth the risk.

The old Sears & Roebuck catalog served two purposes for many decades. First to look through the 1,185 pages to order supplies. Second to be used in the outhouse before Charmin became a household name. I suspect it was even more popular in Nebraska outhouses when that state was on the edge of the wild frontier.

Looking at my hair in the mirror, I realized the hair around my ears is out of control. I haven’t had a haircut since early January. My choice was to either wear my Eagles cap whenever I spoke with Jeri or do my own grooming.

I chose the latter. That was a mistake. Now I get to wear my Eagles cap whenever I FaceTime with my wife.

My hairstylist, Karen Moniz, has been cutting my hair since I had some. Even she will be challenged by fixing my efforts.

get well cards

This evening we were given a bunch of “Get Well” cards from elementary school children at St. Anthony School in Columbus, Nebraska, about 90 miles from Omaha. Each card had notes to us. Their notes talked about themselves. One must have known I love humor, especially Nebraska humor.

Sydney wrote, “What did the corn say when the farmer asked a question?” The answer was cleverly reversed on the page: “I’m all ears.” On the side Sydney shared, “Well that was corny.” I’ll treasure all their cards for a long, long time.

We continue to get threats. Our staff and most friends have been awesome with Jeri’s return. A few, however, have freaked. They don’t want her around. It’s very disheartening and is already adding additional stress to an already stressful situation. My wife is not a leper. She was quarantined for 26 days. She’s never had the virus. Some people are acting as if we are still in the middle ages.

I go to bed praying that tomorrow’s Post-It Note will show negative.

There is currently no vaccine to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. However, as a reminder, CDC always recommends everyday preventive actions to help prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, including:

  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Stay home when you are sick.
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.
  • Follow CDC’s recommendations for using a facemask.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

  1. Prayers for post it notes with negative results! That’s the goal for you! Get well soon! Keep up your sense of humor!

  2. Bless you Carl. You and Jeri have been through so much and are in my prayers. My coworkers are also praying for you both. Hang in there!

  3. Are they providing you with any vitamins? EmergenC or Wellness blend? Is there anything you can do in your room to make you sweat? Tell the doctors to prescribe you a sauna or a stationary bike. Maybe it will he
help you sweat out some Corona…the virus doesn’t do well in heat…
And can they provide you sugar free Gatorade? Sugar slows down our immune systems.

Praying for you and Jeri; for others to get over their fears; and that you will be well and home soon.

  4. Loved Sydney’s card and humor. I thought f you this morning This was on the news. https://www.msn.com/en-us/music/news/weird-al-yankovic-decides-against-coronavirus-parody/ar-BB10HIhk I am sure by now you have heard that Newsom has finally declared California a state of emergency so the funding and expertise will be readily available.

I also watched Jeri’s interview upon her discharge she did great. I started crying with her. My husband and I will be married 45 yrs in May and I can’t imagine how hard this has been on the both of you. God Bless for and praying for a negative post it result.

  5. Is there any risk by having the cards presented to you while in isolation? I assume not – because the cards are lying on your bed. Nonetheless, I would be concerned that hospital staff allowed the cards in the room until you are given the “all clear”.

Before you leave Omaha, be sure to have lunch/dinner at The Drover – great steakhouse! Then, pick-up a few things for your wife and yourself at Von Maur’s out at Westroads Mall – great store and great service!

  6. I am so sorry to read that you and Jeri are getting threats. People are so ignorant, they need to go online and read and get informed. May God bless both of you and keep you safe. Hang in there, its almost over.

  7. Hi Carl

Great Senior Hour yesterday. Jeri and I hugged. It was so good to see her. Yes, you are looking a little disheveled, but that will be fixed when you get home and you will be as handsome as ever. Hang in there, Carl. We all love and miss you. See you soon. Hugs to you.

  8. Hi Carl

  9. Thank you so much for continuously publishing these updates!! I love your sense of humor and your incredibly positive outlook. I have told many of my friends to read your articles and we all agree we feel as though you are a friend!! I am praying your tests come back negative and that you get to go home and be with Jeri soon!!!

  10. Thank you so much for letting us in on your journey to recovery!!

Your blog has given me some peace of mind (and humor) knowing that, at least for most, the virus isn’t as scary as the media is making it out to be. It is hard to remain calm during a time where a lot of people are spreading lies in efforts to scare us, but your story is inspiring. I am keeping you in my prayers and hoping your post-it comes back “negative”! We are all rooting for you!!

Hang in there – you got this!!!! 🙂

  11. Bless you Carl and Jeri!
Carl I feel like I know you both reading your updates. I can’t imagine how stressful and scary this experience must be for you both. You have been very helpful with getting information out and I have enjoyed your sense of humor through it all. I hope you get to go home soon. I’m sure Jeri can’t wait.

  12. So appreciate your posts. I’m just shocked people are trolling and being harsh. Praying they stop. So unnecessary. Praying for negative test results for you and mark.

  13. Carl,
Saw you on CNN. Best wishes to you in your recovery and journey back to health and normalcy.

  14. Carl, I hope you test negative so you can get home soon. Thank you so much for your wit and details going through this. Looking forward to your future posts. I am so happy your wife made it home. Praying for you and your friends. Take care

  15. Thank you so much for sharing your story! It’s incredible the way media is blowing everything out of proportion. I listened to your interview on the How Men Think podcast with Gavin DeGraw and Brooks Laich. This definitely eased a lot of anxiety I had based on media coverage (and I’m a healthcare provider, following CDC reports, but how can you not be nervous, with what is being reported in the news?). I am glad your wife is home and praying for your speedy recovery and negative tests! Thanks so much for sharing your experience. Very informative.

  16. Ive been reading about your progress, or stagnation of progress. How about going on a flonase and orange juice binge? I’ve a feeling you might be out of there in a hurry if you do.

    Good Luck.
    Aarons Smith, PhD

  17. How are you doing? I have been missing reading the updates! I saw you on Fox I think yesterday morning. Hope you are getting better!

  18. Carl- don’t leave your biggest fans hanging! But truly
    though…hope you are getting better!

  19. Thank you for sharing your story. I just read through all of your blog entries and was amused and calmed by them. I appreciate it how positive you and your wife have been throughout this whole ordeal. I can’t even imagine! Take care of yourself and hope you can return home soon.

  20. Thank you so much for the fascinating daily update of your journey. Your attitude and respect for all involved are remarkable. I have learned so much about the virus and do feel confident more now in our health care system. I flew home from Quebec last weekend to find a different USA than when I left just a week prior. I have since learned that Quebec has closed all schools and parliament as well, before we did.
By the way-they are out of all toilet paper and paper towels too-but they are still making maple syrup and poutine…so all is good in the world.
Hope you are are on the mend-and keep those posts coming.
PS: My late son attended CalArts-in your town -McLean Pkwy has special meaning to us as we pass by on the 5 fwy-always with tears.

  21. Carl, Thank you so much for your first hand account of the experience. You have provided many of us with a much better understanding of what may be coming. Prior to your blog it was only statistics of X number infected and Y number deceased. I wish you a continued recovery and thank you again.

About Carl Goldman

Carl Goldman, along with his wife, Jeri repurchased KHTS AM-1220, Santa Clarita’s hometown station on October 24, 2003. They owned it from 1990-1998, and then sold it to Clear Channel Communication in 1998, buying it back from Clear Channel in 2003. Since then, they have rebuilt KHTS as a critical voice of the Valley. In 2015 the radio station moved to its new headquarters on Main Street in Old Town Newhall, in the original Newhall Hardware building. In 2018 an FM was added, 98.1, with its signal being simulcast with AM-1220. In January 2020, Carl and Jeri cruised on the Diamond Princess. Carl was one of the first Americans to come down with Covid-19. Months earlier he was impacted by Guillain Barre Syndrome as a result of a Shingles vaccine in September 2019. He is still in recovery from the vaccine.
