Castaic High School On Track To Open On Time

Castaic High School appears to be back on track to open on time, as Southern California Gas officials have received the necessary permits to begin laying down gas pipes.

Officials with SoCalGas announced Monday that they received the necessary permits to begin work installing gas pipes at the 198-acre Castaic High School site.

“SoCalGas submitted all required documents to L.A. County Public Works, and that agency has assured the developer it will issue the permit today, Monday, June 17,” said Marisol Espinoza, spokesperson for SoCalGas. “The developer has shared that they will work with SoCalGas to provide the trench, the houseline release, and other typical developer responsibilities.”

The gas pipes should be completed by August 1, almost two weeks before Castaic High is scheduled to open, according to Espinoza.

Los Angeles County Board Supervisor Kathryn Barger, who represents the Fifth District, which includes Santa Clarita and Castaic, worked with County officials to ensure that the permits were issued quickly.

“The County received the necessary paper from the gas company this morning, and at the direction of Supervisor Barger, we immediately issued the permit,” said Stephanie English, senior deputy for Barger’s office in the Santa Clarita Valley.

English said that Barger’s office would continue to check in with all of the parties involved to ensure that the project would be completed in time.

Officials with the Williams S. Hart Union High School District maintain that Castaic High will still open on time.

“We have every confidence that the school is going to open on time,” said Dave Caldwell, spokesperson for the Hart District. “We have a very firm belief that we will open on August 13.”

In an email sent to the families of the 400 students set to attend Castaic High in August, district officials told parents that they “have no reason to believe there will be any delays.”

“We want to assure you that the Hart School District has been working closely with the construction team, Southern California Gas and Supervisor Kathryn Barger’s office to make certain the school will be ready,” reads the email.

This is not the first utilities challenge that the project has faced. According to officials with the Hart District, the $126.2 million project previously faced similar challenges with both Southern California Edison and AT&T

However, both instances were resolved, with both of those utilities reportedly on track for the planned August opening, according to officials.

“The Castaic community has waited a long time for their high school,” said Steve Sturgeon, a governing board member for the Hart District, in a previous KHTS story. “As we come to the completion of the campus, we can’t overemphasize the importance of our utility companies completing their work on the campus in a timely manner.”

The next step for SoCalGas is to work with a developer to dig a trench for the gas pipe to be laid in, according to Espinoza.
