The Castaic Union School District (CUSD) has been approved for TK-2 waivers for the three elementary schools in the district, with the Board of Trustees expecting to discuss and take action on the decision at the next board meeting, officials said Saturday.
On Saturday, the CUSD Board of Trustees sent a message notifying families that the TK-2 waivers allowing in-person schooling for elementary school classes have been approved by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, allowing the three elementary schools in the district to open for classes. This would enable limited in-person instruction for children whose ages benefit most from classroom learning, according to L.A. County officials.
“Given the importance of the decision the board unanimously has decided to add the return to in-person instruction for our TK-2 students to the agenda for discussion and action at our next regularly scheduled meeting on December 14th,” read an email from Board President Fred Malcomb.
The date has been chosen to allow for the newly elected board member, Janene Maxon to be apart of the discussion and decision, as she will be sworn in at the beginning of the meeting, according to Malcomb.
Under the looming California regional stay-at-home order, schools that have previously reopened for in-person instruction may remain open, and schools may continue to bring students back for in-person instruction under the elementary school waiver process. Thus, CUSD students are expected to be allowed to return to the classroom under current guidance.
