UPDATE: A number of school districts throughout the Santa Clarita Valley, including the William S. Hart Union High School District and the Castaic Union School District, have extended their campus closures in an effort to curb the spread of the coronavirus.
Officials with several of the school districts in the Santa Clarita Valley reached out to families Friday to announce that their physical campuses will remain closed until May 5.
As of Friday afternoon, these districts included:
- The William S. Hart Union High School District
- The Castaic Union School District
- The Saugus Union School District
- The Newhall School District
- The Sulphur Springs School District
Steven Doyle, Superintendent for the Castaic Union School District, emailed families within the district Friday to announce the extension.
“Castaic Union School District will close all schools until May 5, 2020 in response to the COVID-19 emergency,” Doyle wrote. “We will continue to provide updates via email, auto dialer and text message as this situation evolves.”
The decision from the Santa Clarita school districts was made following announcements from both Los Angeles County and Governor Gavin Newsom that residents were being ordered to stay at home in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The extensions also fall in line with Los Angeles County Superintendent of Schools Debra Duardo’s announcement that her recommendation to close all schools in Los Angeles County would be extended to May 5, according to officials.
“We understand how challenging these decisions are for our families and we appreciate your support and patience,” Doyle wrote. “We are very grateful for all that our students, staff and parents are doing to support safety, continuity of education and feeding our children.”
Doyle went on to encourage parents and families to discuss the situation with their students in order to help them better understand what is happening.
“As parents and caregivers, you influence your child’s reaction to information about COVID-19 and school closure,” he wrote. “Ongoing developments regarding COVID-19 may be overwhelming, especially to younger children. Parents and caregivers can help children understand the situation better by discussing children’s questions and concerns.”
