COC Announces Summer Session Registration Date

College of the Canyons (COC), local Santa Clarita community college, has announced the prospected summer 2021 session registration date, currently set to be Monday April 26.

The summer session at COC is set to offer over 800 high-demand “core” classes, ranging across a wide array of subjects and disciplines, including non-credit options.

The goal of summer sessions at COC is to offer classes that students need to either graduate or meet prerequisite requirements before transferring to a four-year school or university. This opportunity is also offered to high school juniors and seniors to earn college and high school credit at COC, with waived enrollment fees.

“We are very excited to offer students another robust summer schedule of classes. Summer is an excellent time for incoming students to get a jumpstart on their coursework before the start of the fall semester,” said Dr. Omar Torres, the school’s assistant superintendent and vice president of president instruction.

Registration for 11th and 12th grade highschool students will reportedly begin on Tuesday May 25, and a final late registration period for all students, highschool and general enrollment, is scheduled to begin on Thursday June 1.

Among the many classes set to be offered are a number of Personal and Professional Learning (PPL) classes, practical life skills and lifelong learning for any person, that include English as a Second Language, GED preparation, computer skills, and Spanish for healthcare workers.

A new option for the students, for the first time since its introduction in fall 2020, are said to be offered this summer. These new classes are noncredit english and math courses designed to help prepare students for college-level work in those areas.

Summer classes are scheduled to be held in three different formats in light of the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that there are flexible options for all students. OnlineLive is one format of classes, meeting live as scheduled over the Zoom platform. Fully online classes are also said to be an option, giving students the flexibility to complete instruction at their own convenience. The third option will reportedly be in-person classes, requiring in-person instruction while allegedly following strict safety protocols.

This year, the summer classes are scheduled to run from Monday June 7 to Saturday August 14. The summer session is set to be split into four sessions, and the sessions will allegedly run for 1) five-weeks from June 7-July 10, 2) eight-weeks from June 14-July 24, 3) four-weeks from June 21-24, and 4) five-weeks from July 12-August 14. This provides flexible options that can fit many students’ schedules.

Summer 2021 enrollment fees at California Community Colleges, including Santa Clarita’s College of the Canyons, are set to remain at the mandated $46 per unit, and classes are anticipated to be offered at both the Valencia and Canyon Country campuses.
