COC Hosts Its Yearly Women’s Conference

College of the Canyons (COC) held its annual Women’s Conference at the University Center on Saturday to bring women together.

The event was held at the University Center that included a panel of speakers, breakout sessions and breakfast for attendee’s and this year’s theme was “Think Big Speak Up.”

The event was kicked off by Dr. Dianne Van Hook, College of the Canyons chancellor who gave the introduction.

“This day provides a dedicated time and space for women to listen to one another, share stories, dream about the future and clarify and affirm intention for going forward,” said Van Hook.

Right after Van Hook’s introduction she then introduced this year’s panel who made history in November of 2022 when the City of Hawthorne elected three African American women to their City Council simultaneously.

Van Hook welcomed each panellist one by one as she  acknowledged their accomplishments.

The three panelist were Marie Poindexter-Hornback, the City Treasure, Katrina Manning, the City Councilwoman and Dayna Williams-Hunter, the City Clerk.

Right after the panel, attendees were able to go into breakout session groups where they had the opportunity to connect with multiple community leaders.

Attendees also had the opportunity to hear keynote speakers such as Assemblywoman for the 40th District Pilar Schiavo and Senior Director and Assistant General Counsel at Da Vita Inc. and Vice President of the Board of Governors, California Community College, Hildy Aguinaldo.

“Today is about you and your choices because you are in charge of you no one else is with you 24/7 and from the time you are born until the time you leave this earth, you cannot control everything in life but you can control some factors that determine the quality of your life,” said Van Hook. “Time is the most valuable resource we have, your choices and decisions, because they determine who you will become.”
