COC Uniquely Abled Academy Seeks Applicants With High-Functioning Autism For Job Readiness Training

The Uniquely Abled Academy at College of the Canyons is seeking new applicants with high-functioning autism for job readiness and vocations training, officials said.

The Uniquely Abled Academy (UAA) is a collaboration between the Santa Clarita community and local businesses, training those with high-functioning autism for work preparedness, according to organizers.

“We want to help those struggling with getting careers,” said Karen Navarro, career project coordinator with the UAA. “We help the highly intelligent and hard-working on the path to getting into the workforce.”

Since 2018, 18 trainees have graduated from the program, 17 of which are employed, and 15 of those 17 are working with CNC manufacturing, according to Navarro.

The success of the program’s first two cohorts is allowing College of the Canyons and The Uniquely Abled Project to collaborate for a third cohort, starting in March.

Recruiting for the third cohort has already begun, and the Uniquely Abled Project is looking for qualified candidates.

“It’s not an easy program,” Navarro said. “We want to make sure those who want to be there will be there. The program is 12 weeks, and it’s holistic- learning blueprint reading, hands-on with manual machining and CNC, learning soft skills including job preparedness, resumé writing, as well as learning nuances in the workforce.”

To apply to the UAA, one must first attend an open house tour at COC’s University Center. The open house dates are set for Jan. 15 and Feb. 4.
