College Of The Canyons Announces Free New Classes Fall Semester

College of the Canyons (COC) has announced it is offering tuition-free courses this fall for professional development.

The classes are provided by the School of Personal and Professional Learning at COC, which will be offering a personal trainer certificate program, beginning Oct. 5, and math support classes, beginning Aug. 31 and open for enrollment as late as Oct. 28, free of charge for community members looking to gain new skills to help them gain employment.

Gina Bogna, dean of career services at COC spoke about the non-credit courses, asserting that they “provide students with the necessary skills to gain immediate employment, improve workplace wages or transition to college-level work.”

According to COC representatives, the Personal Trainer Preparation Certificate of Completion helps prepare students for the Certified Personal Trainer exam, required by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. After completing the course, officials say students can pay an additional fee to be given “a digital American Red Cross certificate for CPR, First Aid, and AED…which meets Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) workplace requirements.”

There are eight new non-credit math classes being offered by the School of Personal and Professional Learning. The classes are designed to support GED students, community members and students who are placed in Level One or Level Two math, students who are not in STEM majors, and anyone who would like assistance understanding basic math and algebra.

Each math class gives students 10 hours of instruction and feedback from an instructor. Students can drop the class at any time.

All classes are offered online through Canvas, Zoom or both.
