One of the benefits of an amazing education at College of the Canyons(COC) is the care the college has for students’ health needs, including mental health.

The health and wellness needs of students are always a top priority for COC administrators, and they are happy to help.

“The mission of the Student Health & Wellness Center is to help keep students physically and mentally healthy so that they can succeed in school and life,” the Center’s website reads.

Student Mental Health

The COC Student Health & Wellness Center is centrally located on the community college’s Valencia campus at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road, Santa Clarita, CA 91355.

“We have students that have been isolated for the last couple of years,” said Larry Schallert, Academic Assistant Director of the Health & Wellness Center. “They are feeling a lot of the pressure that comes from that.

Schallert is supportive of those students who find COC’s Health & Wellness Center, for they have taken the steps needed to begin finding help.

“We are still seeing people that have been affected by the ‘Borderline’ shootings and the fires and some of the civil unrest,” Schallert said. “So it’s like a perfect storm in some ways.”

Luckily, COC administrators working with the Health & Wellness Center, including the caring staff at the Center, are prepared for anything and everything.

“We have mental health and first aid training coming up through our School of Personal Professional Training,” Schallert said. “We have Spirit Training, that we work with Henry Mayo, it’s called Suicide Prevention, Intervention, Response Training.”
