Sports Medicine Program At College Of The Canyons Gives Students Tools To Help Heal

The sports medicine program at the college offers students chance to earn certificate and gain experience working with athletic department.

The health and fitness industry has boomed over the last decade.

With an unending array of new workouts and fads arriving on a near-monthly basis, this generation has placed physical health at the top of its priority list.

With the increase in activity comes an increase in injuries. And the Sports Medicine Program at College of The Canyons helps students take the first step toward treating them.

“Students that are interested in a career in athletic training, orthopedic surgery, or physical therapy would greatly benefit from taking classes in our program,” said Sarah Ehrsam, a sports athletic trainer at College of The Canyons.

Working with over 400 athletes across the school’s 17 intercollegiate sports, students in the program can earn a certificate that will teach them about basic body movement, common orthopedic injuries, and sports injury healing processes.

Becoming a sports medicine professional, such as a physical therapist, requires an advanced degree. Ehrsam says that the certificate earned through the Sports Medicine Program at College of The Canyons is a stepping stone and an efficient way to begin a career in the field.

“There’s no application process to become part of our sports medicine program and all of our classes can actually be taken in one semester,” Ehrsam said.

Students will also learn clinically relevant skills like the application of ultrasound, electrical stimulation, rehabilitation charting, and exercise instruction, all under credentialed supervision. The learning outcome of the certificate earned from the program is  “to demonstrate skills and proficiency in therapeutic procedures” and “…effectively administer therapeutic modalities and exercise to patients,” according to Ehrsam.

For those looking to aid in an athlete’s recovery journey, the sports medicine program is ready to put its participants on the fast track to success. “We love partnering with this community and we love seeing the students in our community excel,” Ehrsam said. “If we can provide them with the education and certificate they need to enter the workforce, we want to help them achieve that.”
