Santa Clarita Stanford-Bound Student Named 2022 Milken Scholar

A Stanford-bound student who recently graduated Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita has been selected as one of the few 2022 Milken Scholars, winning $10,000 scholarships and career mentoring resources.

Katy Shin, a 2022 Golden Valley High School graduating senior, was one of the 12 students selected from Los Angeles County as a 2022 Milken Scholar,  an honor that is rewarded with a $10,000 scholarship and a “lifelong” career mentoring resources from the Milken Scholars Program.

“Milken Scholars was founded in 1989 by Lori and Michael Milken to honor exceptional young individuals based on their academic performance, community service, leadership activities and ability to overcome obstacles, according to the program’s website. “By identifying these extraordinarily talented youth and then providing resources and networks to them, so they can help themselves and those around them, the program aims to support Milken Scholars during their academic and professional careers.”

Shin was selected out of the 1,080 winter and 350 spring applicants, and asked to participate in a final round of interviews, and landed one of the 12 $10,000 scholarships

“As you can imagine, Katy excelled throughout the process and provided ample evidence of her academic achievements, leadership ability and commitment to community service,” said Jane Foley, Director of the Milken Scholars Program. “We are truly honored to include her in the Milken Scholars Program, and believe her participation will further enhance the quality of the program as well as benefit her academically, personally and professionally.”

Through the program, the 2022 Golden Valley High School valedictorian and Stanford-bound student is being offered a “lifetime access” to a wide array of resources including ongoing academic and career-related counseling, assistance with internships, opportunities for community service and a fund to assist with the transition from college to graduate school or work-field, according to the program

Shin is expecting to put these resources and scholarship to use through the Milken Scholars program to study psychology at Stanford University, in hopes of one day having a career in psychology.
