U.S. Army veteran Sage Rafferty announced that he is running for the Area 4 seat in the Saugus Union School District (SUSD) Board in November 2020.
In a statement, the candidate said he would advocate for the teachers’ need for “a fair paycheck and manageable class conditions.”
Top priorities for Rafferty include improving board transparency, reducing deficit spending and increasing academic achievement for all students, including those in special education programs.
Rafferty graduated with a bachelor’s in Political Science from the University of Montana in 2006. He then attended the U.S. Army Officer Candidate school, earning a commission as a Second Lieutenant.
He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2013, where he supervised logistics for the operations of the 10th combat aviation Brigade. Rafferty retired as a Captain in 2015, after nearly nine years of service. Currently, the candidate is an aerospace manufacturing manager at PPG Industries.
After retiring from the Army, Rafferty moved to Santa Clarita, where he, his wife and his child, who attends Saugus high school, have resided for the past five years.
