Saugus Union School District Board President Julie Olsen announced her intention to resign at the July 21 board meeting.
Olsen announced she filed a notice of intent to the L.A. County Office of Education for the last day of service on the Governing Board for SUSD on Aug. 16.
“It’s with mixed emotions that my family made the difficult decision to move up our relocation plans to reduce the number of significant transitions our soon-to-be 7th grader will experience this coming school year,” Olsen wrote. “Starting at a new school is a big deal for kids and doing so twice in one year, along with the stresses and challenges that come with navigating the COVID-19 pandemic just didn’t feel like the right thing to do.”
The hardest part of this move, because of COVID-19, is that Olsen won’t be able to see so many of you in person before we move, she said.

“It’s been an honor to serve on the Saugus Governing Board and be part of the team that’s ushered in incredible progress these past few years. I’m so grateful for the hard work and dedication of all Saugus administrators, teachers, staff, and volunteers,” Olsen wrote. “In the face of so many significant challenges you have proven time and time again that ‘together, we achieve more.’”
She was elected in 2016 to represent Trustee Area 3 and is serving her second rotation as the board’s president.
Olsen previously announced in February she is not seeking reelection and was intending to serve out her term until December 2020.
