The California State Preschool program allows low-income families to have their children attend preschool with state subsidies. The Child Development Programs being offered locally will help young minds prepare for their next educational step, according to Rose Villanueva, a coordinator for the programs.

“It really supports the development of the children,” Villanueva said. “Our children are like sponges at a young age and it’s very important that they are exposed to preschool programs. We understand that many families cannot afford tuition-based (programs) and that’s why state programs are so important.”

Parents of three and four year olds that are interested in the program can choose from one of the three locations in Santa Clarita: Cedarcreek Elementary School in Canyon Country; Rio Vista Elementary School in Canyon Country; and Santa Clarita Elementary School in Saugus.

Spaces are limited for the subsidized program, with 96 preschool seats available among the three locations, according to Villanueva.

As applications are being reviewed for school the school year starting on Aug. 15, parents with four year olds will be given priority, added Villanueva.

The application is asking for the following requirements from parents:

  • Current Utility Bill or Rental Agreement
  • Birth Certificate for each child under 18 in your home
  • Current Immunization Record including TB
  • Paycheck Stubs or other sources of income

(1 months’ worth for each working parent)

Applications can be picked up at the Cedar Creek location, where supervisors can help parents with process, according to Villanueva.

  1. State subsidies equals us, the taxpayers again. People are moving out of this state in droves now. We get out there and work every day and our pay checks are slimmer and slimmer.
