Saugus resident and teacher Matt Watson announced Monday the intent to run for the Saugus Union School Board, seeking election in the Area 4 seat.
Watson cites a need for “experienced leadership and innovation” as the Saugus Union School District faces unprecedented challenges, according to a statement.
The candidate said his top priorities are “the health and safety of students and staff, along with investments in training and infrastructure.”
Having moved to Saugus with his family in 1980 because of the caliber of its local schools, Watson says Saugus schools must evolve “if we in order to remain the “beacon” that they were in 1980.
Watson attended Santa Clarita Elementary School and Arroyo Seco Junior high before graduating from Saugus High School as part of the class of 1990.
He graduated CSUN with a bachelor’s in History, subsequently earning his MA in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies from CSUN as well.
Over his 25 year career, Watson has taught various grades ranging from third through twelfth grade in addition to working in school administration as an assistant principal as well as a principal. He has also held positions where he designed curriculum in the past and was an integral part of school leadership.
Additionally, he recently hosted a daily radio show on KHTS with the aim of helping students and families transition to distance learning. There, he addressed issues ranging from setting up equipment to caring for children’s mental health during coronavirus quarantine.
Watson believes that the COVID-19 pandemic can be used “as an opportunity to leverage the talent and dedication of our teachers to prepare our students to lead our city and our country into a future that is sure to continue to evolve.”
