Charter School In Santa Clarita Brings “Imagineering” To The Classroom

SCVi Charter School in Santa Clarita presented their learners/students with a unique project by giving them the opportunity to create their own addition to Disneyland.

SCVi provides project based learning to their learners and have seen tremendous success with the new and innovative method of teaching.

SCVi Lower School Director Nessa Roffredo discussed what project learning is on SCVi’s Eye on the Valley radio show, “Project Based Learning can be understood more as an experience more than the linear series of lessons.”

We have our learners learn about the subject and create a project with something to show at the end based on the overall lesson, Roffredo said.

“The difference with project based learning is that the project is the entire journey,” Roffredo said. “From the beginning of the driving question posed by the facilitators to the project itself and everything in between.”

SCVi Facilitator Shawna Brown recently had her learners embark on a project that posed the question, if you were to build a land that would be a part of Disneyland, similar to Tomorrowland and Fantasyland, how would you be able to have your land be visually appealing, tell a story and evoke an emotional response with guests of all ages.

The learners final project consisted of 3 main components, a full business model & proposal, a scaled model of their ride or themed attraction and a commercial that creatively showcases their features of their land.

We were able to have our 4th and 5th graders get their creative spark ignited by having them work with Disney Imagineers directly, Brown said.

Disney Imagineers are responsible for all the creativeness around Disneyland, from the rides to the layout of the park and different lands throughout Disneyland.

The learners were excited about learning every aspect of their project and took to the concept fairly quickly.

Some of the other projects SCVi learners are doing include: How can we use plants to spread happiness, What can I invent to help our community, Creating your own civilization based off of ancient civilizations, Creating a personal code to live by based off of ancient religion and ethics and much more.

  1. Sounds like “fun”, but how’s their basic skills with proper communication, math, etc.?! It’s nice to learn and respect Ancient life, but how will living in ancient ethnics, religions, behaviors help struggling kids get ahead in 2021 and beyond?! Our modern Societies have enough of those ancient behaviors already and how are they doing getting ahead in today’s world?!
