Charter School In Santa Clarita On Preparing High School Students For College Or University

A guidance counselor from a charter school in Santa Clarita went on the SCVi “Eye on the Valley” radio show to discuss how she helps high schoolers prepare for college and how that process works.

“All learners that graduate from SCVi have the ability to apply to a four-year college,” said Kris Nilsen, a guidance counselor at SCVi charter school.

SCVi charter school in Santa Clarita offers an International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme that consists of a unique set of courses to prepare high schoolers for college. With the knowledge they get there, students won’t need to turn to essay writing service, expensive writers, or buy homework.

According to Nilsen, high schoolers who attend SCVi charter school in Santa Clarita are prepared for many different possibilities even if they choose not to apply for a college or university directly after high school.

Nilsen says that high school is a good time for students to start preparing for college. Nilsen says that she usually starts with high schoolers during their junior year to prep for college because 9th and 10th grade is a transition and she does not want to “bombard” students.

Nilsen says that this year SCVi charter school in Santa Clarita has over 30 high schoolers applying to four-year colleges despite the difficulties imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

“I’m also trying to provide those opportunities where kids can meet one-on-one with admissions counselors,” Nilsen said.

Nilsen says that colleges have been providing many virtual resources and opportunities for students looking into higher education.

According to Nilsen, one area that has changed for many students is colleges are offering virtual tours of their campuses in place of an in person tour. Some colleges across the country are still offering in person tours, according to Nilsen.

Most of the college application process has remained mostly unchanged this year except for some key factors, according to Nilsen. Nilsen says that many colleges are not requiring students to take the S.A.T or A.C.T. due to testing facility closures across the country.

Nilsen says that she works with high schoolers to help find the college that is best for them. Together they take into account many factors, such as the desired major and financial assistance available.
