How A Charter School In Santa Clarita Is Helping Seniors Prepare For The Future During Distance Learning

A charter school in Santa Clarita is working with their senior class to prepare for their future amongst the challenges faced by the pandemic and distance learning.

An English instructor and senior class advisor at SCVi charter school in Santa Clarita, Cheryl Sena, sat down with Matt Watson on the “Eye on the Valley” radio show to discuss what SCVi is currently doing for their senior class during this time of distance learning.

“We’re all in that same boat right now,” Sena said.

According to Sena, SCVi charter school graduates about 70 seniors per year.

Sena described how most years SCVi holds a special event for their seniors at the beginning of the school year. SCVi calls this event the “Senior Sunrise.” For this event SCVi seniors meet at Castaic lake in the morning to view the sunrise together. Afterwards the students are invited to a pancake breakfast.

Sena said this year the charter school in Santa Clarita adapted the Senior Sunrise event to a virtual environment. Students were invited to view the sunrise with their peers virtually and then cook pancakes together over a video call.

Sena said she hopes to hold an in-person Sunrise event if it becomes safe to do so for the seniors at SCVi charter school in Santa Clarita.

Sena also discussed how SCVi charter school has adapted their International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB programme) for distance learning. The IB program offers the learners at SCVi additional academic opportunities to help prepare them for the future.

“[The IB Programme] is for every learner,” Sena said.

According to Sena, the IB Programme awards a diploma to learners who complete the two year program. The program includes six classes and an additional philosophy course on the theory of knowledge, according to Sena.

Sena also said that one of the goals of SCVi is to expand the IB Programme to make it even better for a wide range of learners at SCVi.

Sena said that SCVi is still working to place students into internships, but that they have had to rethink how the internship program works. One strategy is to have SCVi students take part in video calls with business mentors to learn more about their related fields.
