Matt Watson, host of SCVi/iLEAD’s “Eye on the Valley” on KHTS Radio, was joined by Julia Barragan and Samantha Raskin during the latest show to discuss their biggest program takeaways.

“The International Baccalaureate program is an extremely rigorous academic program,” Watson said. “The aim of the IB program is to develop internationally-minded people who recognize the common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, and help to create a better and more peaceful world.”

The IB program has established a “profile” for its participants, nothing that the young learners who take part strive to be “inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective,” according to Watson.

When asked which of these qualities has proven to be the most important in their own lives after graduating from their high school in Santa Clarita, both responded with “inquirer.”

“I’ve really found that in school and in my work, I need to keep questioning things and keep learning,” Barragan said. “SCVi really instilled that lifelong learning mentality.”

Being an inquirer has been particularly valuable for Raskin as she’s begun her career working in the artistic field.

“I think being an inquirer is so vitally important to art, and continuing to search and learn about your community and humanity at large, as well as being open-minded and continuing to search for answers and learn more about others,” she said.

Raskin added that being reflective is another vital component of the IB program that she’s taken with her into her career.

“Being reflective on history and what’s gone on in history, and not only reflecting on your own history, but the world, and tearing things apart and being able to move forward in a different way and learn from your own mistakes and others’ I think is such an important part to not only creating a company, but being a lifelong learner,” Raskin said.

Watson shared how inspired he is by both Barragan and Raskin’s stories, and concluded the show by speaking directly to the parents who were tuning in that day.

“You may be thinking, ‘Wow, how can I get my kids enrolled in a school that helps prepare them like Julia and Samantha have been prepared?’” he said, noting that the tuition-free SCVi Charter School in Santa Clarita is now enrolling new learners.

He continued, “You can sign up for a tour; you can even schedule a shadow day where your kid kind of test drives us and spends a day in our school alongside kids their age to see how it goes… (All) you need to do is go to our website at ileadsantaclarita.org or call 661-705-4820.”
