Matt Watson, host of “Eye on the Valley” and curriculum specialist at SCVi/iLEAD charter school in Santa Clarita, said that as learners move to distance education, parents may be uniquely positioned to teach by example.

“Maybe right now they learn how to be a mom. How to be a dad,” Watson said. “Are you working from home? They can intern with you, the accountant, or the educator, or the writer.”

A core tenet of the charter school in Santa Clarita involves harnessing the power of internships to help learners find career paths they may enjoy.

“We’ve known for hundreds of years that the best way to learn is through internships,” Watson said. “In fact, it’s a requirement if you’re going to graduate high school at SCVi that you intern with someone.”

Watson explained that many learners attending the charter school in Santa Clarita have found success while interning with family friends or parents, specifically citing one boy who studied sound editing with his father.

Specifically, Watson described how the 10th grader, whose father edits the audio of several popular television series, “shared a couple of scenes and the entire (opening) to a TV show that he edited and mixed himself.”

Through this internship, Watson said that the boy “learned what’s going to be an extremely successful career for him.”

Watson added that learners can also benefit from studying basic life skills with their parents while confined to their homes.

“If they’re old enough, throw cooking duties on them,” Watson advised. “Maybe this is the time your child discovers a passion in culinary arts.”

To parents looking for more structured lesson ideas, Watson recommended online resources put together by the charter school in Santa Clarita. These include webinars for parents and children as well as reading lists and project-based assignments.

“Take this time to bond with your children,” said Watson. “Connect with them. Laugh with them. Keep them healthy, happy and curious. I promise next fall we will teach them to carry the one.”
