SCVi & iLEAD Schools Help Kids Take That Next Step Towards Their Future And Career

Matt Watson hosts of Eye on the Valley provides insight and news about iLEAD and SCVi schools.

Watson is interviewing  Chris Nelson from SCVi. Nelson is the college and career counselor at SCVi to help kids take that next step towards their future and career.

Nelson is set to help the audience discover what steps students should do in order to prepare for their future.

Chris Nelson grew up in the San Fernando Valley and graduated from CSUN with a BA in sociology, criminology and correction. She later went back to school at CSUN for her masters in education with an administrative credential.

She then attended CSU Long Beach and graduated with another masters in social work and a PPS credential. She received her college counseling credential from UCLA and considers herself a lifelong learner.

Nelson worked for the department of child family services as a family reunification case worker for a couple years and Pinecrest schools for 18 years.

Nelson says she has found her passion as a high school counselor and enjoys visiting colleges and helping kids with their journey going into college.

Nelson works now at SCVi charter schools as a college and career counselor, and she also works as a senior advisor and IB counselor.

SCVi has a smaller campus, allowing Nelson to provide a more personalized experience for their high schoolers looking to their future.

Nelson says that they start as early as the 9th grade, using seminars and workshops to tell the kids how to take notes, stay organized and make portfolios. These are the types of skills that will help them throughout high school.

In the 10th grade, Nelson says the students start focusing on their individual preferences, so she uses a program called SCORE to focus on careers.

Nelson talks to each student about their plans for the future, kind of like a private counselor.

In the fall, Nelson tends to focus more on her seniors, when application season starts, Nelson does more individual personalized meetings to help them work through the application and essays.

SCVi is a small charter school in Santa Clarita, and  they are dedicated to helping their community youth find their career.
