Facilitator Erika Cedeno invited her learners to come together virtually in their homes while she demonstrated how to cook the Mexican dish Chilaquiles virtually from her own kitchen, according to an article by the California Charter Schools Association (CCSA).
Before the virtual meeting, Cedeno sent parents an ingredient list so the learners could make the recipe themselves following the demonstration, and invited families to join their kids for the project as well.
Learners were asked to make a video of themselves while they made their own Chilaquiles, explaining each step using Spanish vocabulary and grammar they’ve learned in class, the CCSA article said.

After displaying their finished dish for the video camera, learners were then asked to reflect on every step of the project, and how it helped them continue learning Spanish, according to the CCSA.
While this innovative type of at-home digital project may be new to Cedeno and her learners as a result of distance learning requirements during the coronavirus pandemic, SCVi Charter School in Santa Clarita is no stranger to project-based learning in general.
